Default 4L60 Tranny Problem..

Ok heres the deal...for awhile now my tranny seemed to be surging when it would shift into high gear whether it would be at slow speeds or high reving shifting...I stuck some lucas oil slip treatment and it seemed to remedy the problem but now 1st and 2nd shift fine..even rev. works smoothly...but what happened was I was driving home from work and it started nuetraling on me shifting into 3rd. luckily i only live 4 miles from the fire station i work at..once I got home I checked the tranny fluid which had a faint burnt smell and did not have any discoloration or metal shavings in it. I have a corvette servo with a transpak kit in the car along with a 3600 stall verter..

Now my question is...Is it time for a rebuild as it is my first time dealing with an electronic tranny...My tranny guy said its a common problem with these and has done plenty before...he quoted me 800 buck for a total upgrade.. What do you guys think...he does all my race trans and have never had any issues with any and is willing to warranty anything he does to it..

Any suggestions?

I agree that there is excessive clearance in the 3/4 clutch pack and that is why it is symptomatic. It is time to rebuild it.

My suggestion would be to go with a shop that has extensive experience with those units. This forum is full of Threads where guys talk about their local builder who has a terrific reputation having a hard time keeping their 4L60E alive since the build.

We see those frequently at our shop. It isn't a shot at anyone at all... rather it is a testament to the degree of difficulty in building one of these units and taking one to a high performance level. IMHO you need a shop that has done extensive research on this transmission at their own expense and not their customers expense.

The price you mentioned seems awfully low to me. I know that on average we spend fairly close to that in parts alone when we build one.

Good Luck either way you go!

Relationships are worth their weight in gold sometimes! Sounds like he is a good guy. I appears that you guys have been using him for some time now, good for you. We see guys who shop for the lowest price they can find all the time... and that just is not a good thing when talking about performance powertrain components.

Throughout the Month of March I am not charghing for shipping. If you want to consider running one of our units let me know.

Best regards,

g

I have a local guy that does mine..I recently went through a 4L60E with my 402LSX..

I Ballooned out the Drum that holds 3&4..flared out the Beast Sunshell..blew apart the Sprag, and tore up all kinds of internals..

This new one pulls like a mother focker..he did all kinds of tricks to it. Like said above, make sure the guy has tons of experience with it.

The Shop I got it done at a Friend of mine manages, so I got a little bit of a hookup ofcourse, but still he went after and made sure everything was good.

Looking at this thing still kinda gives me that WTF look..expecially with that big-*** Servo..
