A4 to M6 swap, help
I've got a '98 A4 and I'm looking to swap trannys with a '01 M6. What is everything that we are going to need to do?? Aside from the obvious clutch, console, etc etc. Are we each going to have to buy new wiring harnesses?? What else will we need?? Thanks.

You might check to make sure the wiring harness's are similair?! I don't know if they are different between the years? Gators99ta swapped from an M6 to a a4, but he was lucky enough to swap with another 99(same as his). The guy that did it had to pull the dash, and switch wiring harness's. There was a lot more work than anticipated, but it can be done. Just plan on taking some time!!!!
i would keep the a4 and a stall.i have been driving sticks for 14yrs i missed a shift,it blew my 01 motor.besids the a4 w/stall is better for drag racing(if you do that).
i honestly say you should just swap cars! or buy a MN6 car. it was SO much work and i swaped out with an exact 99TA car, so the computer's matched. i swaped the computer, ENTIRE wiring harness (from the pcm to the rear taillights). i know some say you can splice it but get out of here! swaped trannys, clutch assembly, the entire hydralic lines ( a TON of work), pedals, center consol area, TQ arm, cross brace from teh auto, and a ton of other things. we had to basically tear everything out of the car and take out all the interior pannels to get the wires to work right to opperate the rear taillights and audio speakers! also you VIN number will forever be screwed up, esp with teh whole programing issue since you no longer have an auto. the pcms are different. and this all assumes you can swap out with a same year pcm. now if you get a different year pcm, many parameters are different.
also a guy named Stu's WS6 can talk about this too (we swaped our stuff).
so i say not worth it, just pull off your mods and get yourself a different car.

IMHO, it's far easier going A4 -> M6 than it would be to go from M6 -> A4. I personally wouldn't replace the A4's wiring harness to go M6, it's not *that* many wires. I sold an M6 conversion kit (out of a 94Z parts car I had), and there were only 3 or 4 connections to the tranny - reverse lockout, VSS, CAGS... Then under the dash you have the clutch switches (for starting the car and cruise control). Throw in an M6 PCM and you're good to go.
For the M6 to A4 swap, I'd recommend going the TCI Tranny Controller route. It comes with an A4 connector, and the transmission control computer. The nice thing about this computer is that it is fully laptop configurable, and it is *better* control than the factory computer. You can set WOT shift points based on RPM (niiiice) versus the factory PCM's "anybody's guess" MPH based shift points. The TCI units aren't cheap - I know Tom Byrne was selling his used one for $500, and they price out at about $700, but to me, it'd be worth it. By going with the TCI computer, you have fewer wires to connect to the PCM.
Just some thoughts. Good luck.
