Ive put in about 5 diffrent units and they dont last. 3-4 seems to be the weakest link. Last unit had the 9 clutch set up but didnt last but 48 hrs. Not even 4 WOT runs. If any rebuilders are reading this what do you guys do to make it work. Plus they seem to perform better with out the shift kit!I just cant get it right. What clearance would you suggest for the 3-4 and what about the springs, in or out + what frictions? Oh almost forgot what about torque management could this be my problem? Would greatly appreciate info. My friends and I are into building everything ourselves so we dont want to buy a built one. I guess that makes us hard headed.
The cars are:
2000 Z28 Vortec,Hooker short header no cats. stock internals. No stall convertor yet.
99 Formula 370 cid stageII heads,custom grind cam,3.42 rear,2800 stall convertor.
No HP/TQ #'s because around here,cars seem to dissapear alot when they know what you got. {Miami,FL.}

I wish I could get my transmission builder to talk about how he does it, but his 4L60E's seem to last quite a long time. Well, all his transmissions for that matter (he builds a mean Ford AOD-E too, among other things).. He doesn't particularly care for the TransGo kits either, and doesn't seem to need 'em
He took me for a ride in a 2002 Anniversary WS6 he built a 4L60E for, the car barked the tires going into *3rd* gear with a 2600 RPM converter
The customer requested "VERY FIRM" shifts... lol..
ZAngel's 4L60E has over 10k miles on it so far, and other than an oddball defect - snapping a Raybestos Pro-series kevlar band (replaced with a Borg Warner high energy), it's been perfect. He pulled the high gear clutch pack out to inspect it while we were in there, and it looked perfect. Not burned at all, was something like 0.0065" off the total stack up from when it was new and DRY.
I was in his shop when a customer dropped off his TH700R4 for a "freshen up" job. The guy said it had been running great in his 'vette for 3 years (409cid SBC with a blower).. He pulled the motor for a rebuild and decided to get the transmission looked at while the motor was out.

Yep... gone.. His words were "anything that'll put resistance on the high gear apply isn't good" .. He did a bunch of valve body, sep. plate, and case mods but I'm not sure what
He pulled the sonax 3rd accum. orifice sleeve out of the case too.

I'm running a Alto 9 disk Red Eagle frictions and Kolene plates, dry clearanced @ 0.045".
I put the return springs because I felt: I will have the same clamping pressure as the stock 6 disk but a 50% increase in holding torque. I also felt with the return springs installed; my 3-4 clutch would be less likely to tie up during a 3-2 shift. ... I also felt with more disk-plate clearance the clutch pack would be less likely to drag during WOT 1st and 2nd cycles.
"Batwing" I think he's talking about grinding on the 2-4 band servo baffle.
What type of clearance and modulation set ups have you been trying?

Not an expert by any means but I rebuilt mine myself with no problems bought a manuel $25 and a shift kit, and converter I had about .050" and do not put the spring back in according to the book and the three trans guy I talked to. I took the case to one guy had him put new case bushing in for me and a few other little things he charged me $10. Look up Raptor trans parts on the net they sell everything for your trans for up to 900hp I think can't remember but it is on there website.Good luck!

not an expert, but you were able to successfully do a complete rebuild on a 4l60e with only a $25 manual?
and then have extra help for $10?
this doesn't really sound right at all.

if you aren't an expert..how'd you have the confidence to tear into an electronic transmission
and then have extra help for $10?

Get a job working for Rossler and see how they do it!!!
Really, 700R4's/4L60E's are hard to get right...no local shops here can build a HiPo one at all...only one i have seen no problems with and have experience with is Rossler. As soon as mine starts going bad, its getting the $2695 rebuild, and I wont have to worry about it at all. Look at some major tuners and who they use...LPE, Cartek, etc...they are all using Rossler. I had a LPE Vette for 12 years with 300 hp shot for many of those years and had the trans gone through twice (once was my fault, throttle linkage was screwed up with first nitrous kit). Bang, bang, bang with nitrous...no problems. Doing it yourself is risky, but very adventuresome!
