I bought a TCI non lock up for a TH350/400 about 6 years ago. Off the shelf yea, but it damn sure worked like it was made just for my car.
Since then I bought the same part# converter twice at swap meets still with no problems.

The problem is the lock up converters, or the occasional misbuild.
Look at the recent post where Circle D cut open different converters, I believe one is a TCI.
I had a TCI SF in my 4L60E for a week, they recommended that off the shelf number too. It didn't fail it was just a loose pos and wouldn't hold lock up even though it was stock back then with tuning, transgo kit and PWM eliminated.

Had mine for 3 years now. No problems with it at all. Lots of Track passes and 30 or so N20 passes. Upgrading to a Yank SS4000, Cause I went with a bigger cam and heads. It is a Tci ssf 3500.

It depends on when you bought the converter and waht batch. I had 3 of them take a **** on me, all from the same bad batch within a few months of each other. The car before this one had their brand new SSF4000 at the time, and ran great. They are mass produced and their QC is not that great. Kevin Winstead himself told me that 150 out of 500 of their converters came up with broken parts. If you do have a problem with one of them, good luck getting your inquiries answered promptly. Jerry in warranty is not the easiest to deal with and they take forever to take care of any problems.

The saying "you get what you pay for" is often worn out, but in this case, it is true. Go with a company like Yank who stands behind their product and has a great warranty just in case. 3 years is hard to beat for a Yank converter. Call up Dave and he will spec one out for you. I would never go with another company after switching to Yank.
