4L80-E Discussion
Why has no one done this yet?? The core is expensive as hell, $1000...but for $200 TransGo offers a full manual VB and I thought I heard some talk about a brake as well. Fitment isnt that bad...little BFH here, two small cuts here.
So, who's thinking about pulling the swap? Who tried and failed?
I know PSJ is eyeing this....

If you do not want to run a tranny controller, and like full manual shifts, Transgo has a kit for about $200 that makes the 4l80E fully manual and eliminates the need for a computer. Also, TCI among others, offers a valvebody which effectively turns the 4L80E into a 6 speed automatic by engaging the overdrive in additional gears. So you got many of the benefits of a GearVendors without needing a gear splitter unit. /Monty

You will need to make a indention in the floor where the tranny cooler lines come out of the tranny, I just used a pry bar and bent the floorboard while prying against the tranny.
You will need to cut a hole in the floor board where the main computer connector goes, it is on the drivers side and there is not enough room between the tranny and the floor so it needs about a 2 inch hole in the the tranny tunnel right where the connector is on the tranny, I did this with the tranny already in so I could tell where it needed to be, there are two other small connectors that need to be ran to the tranny on the same side so I ran them through the same hole also.
I am a welder fitter so I fabed my own crossmember if you are seriouse about the swap and have access to a welder and a drill let me know, and I will tell you how to make one.
The first time I took the tranny out I cut off all the extra mounting brackets that are not in use, I think there was 4 of them, I would recommend doing this before installing, as it will make it easier to fit in your tranny tunnel, with those gone and the excess casting gone, other than the other mods I told you about with the cooler lines and the hole it will fit beutifull.
I am running a tci stand alone computer, and a 3600 precision industries stall, you will also need a yoke for a th400, and a custom length driveline, any other q's e-mail me at edge9999@mybluelight.com

It's easy to do, you just pay the price in weight (extra 100# over a TH350) and efficency. Some day when my car runs 8.90 I'll throw a 4L80E in so I can have a 9.00 streetcar.
I plan to do a 4L80E this winter, but I will be running a T400 this year.
I'm sure the install can't be that bad, just some clearancing.
I still can't see why one couldn't run a vacuum modulated automatic valvebody and obviate the need for a pcm controller, isn't that what the 200R4 peeps do?

2004r has a TV cable to contro, shifts as did the early 700r4s, the 4L80e has no choice but to run with some sort of electronics because solenoids shift it...

I just purchased a 4L80E from www.netgearhead.com for my 96 ImpalaSS. I specifically told them that I wanted it built to handle 1000+ HP. I also requested the 2.75 first gear ratio and 1.57 second gear ratio (instead of the 2.48/1.48) so the gearing would be closer to that of the 4L60E. I havent had a chance to try her out cuz the motor isnt finshed yet. I should be able to test the tranny in the next couple months once everything is done and hooked up. I keeping my fingers crossed and hoping she holds up like shes supposed to....if not I got 12 month warrenty
The only way you're gonna run a 4L80E without the computer is to install a shift kit to give you full manual shifts (the transmission will be in the gear you select and changes to any gear you choose when you move the selector).
