A 350 is a good trans, built right. What does it take? Talk to some good tranny folks, these have been around a long time. I personally (talking late 70s'/early 80s') had better luck with the 400 trans. Heavier, maybe, but rock solid if put together right.
The converter choice is going to depend on how much HP/ what diff gear ratio (to simplify it). I've seen some rough formulas for stall/STR choices on converters for given choices, but it's all pretty subjective. Check out your local drag strip and ask a lot of questions! Car folks like to talk performance once you get to know them.

this is going to be an all motor setup, with heads/ cam so it wotn make a whole **** load of ;ower, somewhere in the 440's i would imagine
TApimp,
I would recommend blue-plate clutch with Kolene steels, trans brake, deep cast aluminum pan, and after market drum/sprag assembly (all TCI stuff). This set-up should not give you any trouble and will be reliable (with a trans cooler).
