In my wifes LT1, the tranny won't shift into 4th. ATAP shows it in 4th, but the tranny is in 3rd. The convertor will lock up every once in awhile, but not all the time. Isn't there a solenoid in the tranny for each gear or is it one for all gears. Tranny shifts fine, just no 4th.

I had the same thing happen to my tranny in my z28. Is the tranny fluid burnt?....basically, its going to need a rebuild. Do you get any ses lights?

No the fluid is fine.
No SES lights.
Weird thing is, the computer has 'told' it to go into 4th, and ATAP shows it, but it doesn't go in.
I may call the guy that rebuilt it a ~year ago.

Usually, when the 3-4 clutches go, they do so gradually, meaning that it'll still shift into 3rd and 4th but it'll slip when doing so if at WOT.

Just taking a stab here. Your 2-4 band has to hold 2nd and you've got 2nd. Your 3-4 clutch has to hold 3rd and you've got 3rd. Your PCM is signaling your trans for 4th and she won't go.... I think if it were me I would take an ohms reading of the appropriate shift sol.
Typically when a trans is on its way out it will act up warm when the fluid is thin and warn seals can't hold pressure. Solenoids can be just the opposite.
I would still tell the Wife it's from her beating on the thing and you'll just have to see what you can do ... LOL

Well I checked the fluid again yesterday and it is a bit brown a burnt smelling. Don't know if that's from her winding it up on the interstate on the way to work or not. She did tell me that a few times she would be cruising along ~65 and the rpms would jump to ~3500 for a few seconds then drop down. It would do it ONLY at a cruising speed ~60-70. At speeds faster or slower, it would act fine. WOT feels fine. Doens't slip going into any gear. Gonna call my tranny guy today.
