Default What MPH should I lock up converter??? Please help.

What Mph are you big cam guys locking your converter at? I think mine is still at the stock lock up and it when it does lock up it seems way out of its powerband. Can I get a few sugestions of what MPH to lock it up at. I have a appt tomorrow to adjust via LS1 Edit.
By the way I have a Vig 3600.

Thanks

Gil

It's not a question of what mph to lock-up, but more of what rpm to lock-up. You should lockup once you get above 5500 rpms in 3rd gear. This will drop your rpms to around 5000, but your rwhp will still be better locked up at 5000 than unlocked at 5500 (with the Vig 3600 anyway).

do you mean when driving around or when racing? i think pat is referring to racing but i have a question about that. why not lock it up at the beginning of second gear? unless you have a huge stall you probably wont be under your stall rate when you hit second and you will have the extra horsepower of a locked converter.

I am talking about normal driving. It locks up and it feels like I loose all power.

For daily driving with 3.73 gears, you should lock up the converter at about 35 mph in OD.

Also, you wouldn't want to lock-up in 2nd gear unless you could unlock for the 2-3 gear shift. You want to use the torque multiplicaton and shift extension of the converter after the shift. If the converter was locked up, the rpms would drop to around 3500 rpms on the shift vs.around 4800-5000 with the Vig 3600.

Dont lock up at all! Im about to try a 3000rpm & 3.73 gears with no lockup plate. You can disable the lockup and trans slip codes in edit. Generally I have always hated the converter lockup - it always wants to lockup when you dont want it to. I am willing to forgo some fuel economy to get rid of the annoying lockup.

Sometimes I like my converter to lock up right away in my car. I have a pretty loose converter so the early lockup helps me get moving sometimes without riding the converter like crazy.

The trick is to raise your shift points a bit if you don't want the car to be too sluggish yet be locked up. I don't upshift to OD until 40 mph and then let it lock-up. In 3rd I lock up around 33 mph.

BTW, I probably would not lock up a H&C car at 5500 unless your converter efficency is horrible. You're still climbing in HP. Closer to 6000 you flatten out and so if you fall back to 5500 it is not such a loss.

This was not a joke. These non-lockup converters have been tried and tested before. If you do a search, there are a few manufactures that make non-lockup conveters for the 4l60e. I guess it depends how 'loose' and efficient your converter is. Ive found with the stock conveter the lockup plate is too 'busy', ie: locks as soon as the throttle position drops low enough and will unlock as soon as you get on the gas abit. I dont know if you guys have a 'performance mode' switch on your autos, but mine is set not to lockup until 50mph in 4th and I find it better to drive at lower speeds without the TCC locked up. Youll probably find most conveters except the high end or race conveters dont have a strong enough clutch to withstand lockup at WOT.

when a converter "locks up" a clutch engages and there is no more "slipping" so it doesnt take as many revs to maintain a certain speed
