Default Converter Problem: Update

Ok, just got back from the shop. Not good news. He says the problem is in the transmission.

Problem started with the car shuddering when it locked up.....drove it a couple days and then the car started to make bad noises. So I parked it and told him to get to it when he could.

Now I am faced with either rebuilding/replacing the tranny. I need some opinions from you guys!

I found a Street Stage1 4L60E on LS1 Speed for $999. Good idea?
Or take it to a shop to have it rebuilt?

Thanks again guys!

Hey Krazy, If your buying a tranny on price, go to the wrecking yard. If your looking for quailty and performance, go to a builder near you, preferably one with a toqure wrench. The problems I've encountered with the verious "stages" is the customers' are buying off price, with disregard to the verious Mod's they have. And they are comeing up short. It seems they think a tranny is a tranny is a tranny, and this is not true at all! With the mail order trannys you've got to pull em and ship em back should a problem arise. Just my thoughs, I hope this helps you.

Take it to a reputable local transmission shop. I almost bought a SpeedInc Stage 2 trans but I decided to use the local shop in town. I showed him the list of parts that the stage 2 had and he said he could build it just the same for about $250 less. Plus I get a 1 year 12K mile warranty and I won't have to bother with shipping the trans across the country if I had any problems.

KraZy,

Sorry to hear about your tranny, but what exactly did the guy at that shop say what the problem is with your tranny. I just curious to hear the problem.

Hello again Kevin,

Once again, very impressed with your quick responses.

The local shop said it 'sounded' like the tranny, I doubt he pulled it.

So I stopped by a tranny shop, as recommended by the gentlemen before you, he is going to open it up this weekend. Says he can build the tranny better than the Stage 1 for less. He also added that both the tranny and tc are probably gone.

His estimate was $1100-1200 w/o a new tc.

I am very appreciative of all the help.
