Default HELP!!! Spec III Install Problems!!! HELP!!! HELP!!!

Alright, I'm about at the end of my rope...

I've got the Spec Stg III flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate installed and am in the process of trying to reinstall the transmission.

Here's the problem... every time I try to reinstall the tranny, I can't get it any closer than a little over an inch from the bellhousing. When I peered in between the tranny and bellhousing, it looks like the throwout bearing is flush against the pressure plate. That can't be right, can it??? If not, what could be causing the problem??

I tried removing the slave and removing and reinstalling the t/o bearing (thought maybe I hadn't installed it correctly), but I don't see how I could put it on any other way than I did (which, by the way, I can no longer get back on... anyone got any good suggestions for resecuring that thing on the slave??).

At this point, I'm pretty much begging you guys for some help and insight... I'm so damn close to finishing up my first clutch install it's just killing me <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />

Couple of things to consider. Are you sure you installed the flywheel in the right direction? ie clutch side facing the tranny.

Is your pressure plate bolts torqued to spec? If they are less than spec then the fingers of the PP might be further out than they should be.

Have you put white lithium grease on the input shaft before reinstalling?

Have you tried angling your tranny at different angles?

Are you sure your clutch is properly aligned?

It sounds like it might be a simple alignment problem. If you're having trouble getting the tranny's input shaft to line up with the engine, try placing a jack on the front of the engine(as far in front of the motor mounts as you can find). This should make it easier to line the tranny up and slide it in.

Hopefully one of these suggestions will help you out. Let me know if you run into any snags.

Mike

Another thing if the alignment is right.Try loosening the bleed valve on the slave while you install the tranny. The slave could not be fully compressed.

When I removed the old t/o bearing and plastic sleeve, it ended up coming off in my hand before I got a chance to see how it was on there in the first place. I initially was able to pop the new sleeve/bearing on the slave (again, not sure if it was on correctly though), however I can't even get that to stay on correctly now.

It just strikes me as odd that with everything seemingly in alignment, the throwout bearing is flush against the pressure plate fingers while there's still a good inch between the bellhousing and transmission. Maybe a better understanding of how the throwout bearing works when actuated would help me.

Hey Paul, I sent you an e-mail with a bunch of suggestions. But I will say that the slave should messure 3 3/8" from base to T/O bearing. So if yours sits further off the tranny than that, then yes that's your problem and you might need another one. Let us know if that's the issue.

Went home for lunch and I measured the t/o bearing/slave assembly it appears to be about 3 3/8" from base to bearing, just as you suggested, although I can't get the t/o bearing to stay on the slave anymore...

As soon as I get the email, I'll take a look; I'm dying to get my car running again <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />
