Default converter install and tuning question

At the place where I got a quote to do my TC (vig 2800) install the guy says that he may need to do "tuning" via LS1 edit after the install for an extra $200.

I have an HPP3 to change shift points and shift firmness settings.
And I was planning on doing the PCM Idle Learn Procedure.

What exactly do you think he is talking about and is it necessary?

Do the TC install first. See how the car reacts to the converter. The '00 cars sometimes do not show torque management issues as badly as th '01-'02 cars. He may be right...Edit may have to be done, but sometimes the 2800 works for some just fine. Best of luck & don't spent the $$, unless you have to.... You probably won't need anything that the HPP3 can't handle. If you do, forget paying $200. Take that cash, sell the HPP3 and buy Edit. Then you can set part throttle shift points, change lock-up, etc.

This is what the guy is saying now:

"Unfortunately, without custom tuning you will get a trasmission slippage code which will automatically put you into abuse/tranny saver mode where your trans will always shift max stiff to save the clutches."

Is this really going to happen and if so is it caused by TM?

And the prices are:
install - $350
tune - $200
cooler install - $135

geez, only $685 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Do those prices include the vaseline? <img border="0" alt="[shoot]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" />

Not only are his prices high for the cooler and converter install, I've never seen an F-body go into abuse mode from converter slip. Some vettes had issues with converters over 3300 stall but I don't think that they didn't go into abuse mode. You could have SES codes from a converter, but those are annoying, but not fatal. The slip codes aren't even the ones that normally get tripped. Unless he disables all your tranny codes (I would not recommend doing this), he can't gaurantee anything. Additionally, these are not TM related issues and with Edit you could get rid of that.

Keep looking for a better shop.

More Thoughts <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

....actually funny when you think about it... take his 135 cooler install and the 200 tuning and 350 install and do it yourself and buy EDIT for 550 and put 135 back in your pocket <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> I've never dropped a tranny before and I did my install with a buddy in 5 hours and it runs perfect <img border="0" alt="[driving]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_driving3.gif" />

What is a decent price to pay for TC install?

topfueluhl my parents live in Indian Peak In Lafayette. I am stationed at Fort Knox, It seen your 1/4 mile times and it was a reminder of how great it is for the hotrod at sea level. I do miss the scenery in Boulder though.. <img border="0" alt="[burn out]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_burnout.gif" />

As far as what is a good price, I had a guy who was going to do it for me in his garage for like $250 but he doesn't currently have time. I may have to wait.

I've read a lot of converter posts in these forums and I don't recall anyone having problems with a Vig2800 in a '98-'00 car.

I paid $300 to have my old Vig converter installed (pretty much the going rate in my area), but that price for the cooler install is a joke! I never had installed one before, but after I was quoted $300 for installation at a local shop, I decided it was something I could learn to do myself.

It ended taking me about 90 minutes to do on my own. There really isn't much to it at all...

Well I got a quote for $200 for the 'verter install from a local reputable tranny shop. That doesn't include the cooler but I think that is the route I will end up going.

Tough decision eh? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

$200 is an excellent price. $250 +/- $50 is the normal range.

Cooler install is 20 minutes with a car on the lift. All you do is hook-up the existing stock cooler lines to go through the cooler (on the return from the radiator back to the tranny), rest the cooler on the condensor, and put the little tie on strap on to hold it in place. top off your fluid and you are good to go.

Be sure to check the fluid level when hot.
