Default Converter and Torque MGMT on a 1998 SS

If I put a converter in my 98 SS, would I HAVE to delete torque management? I have read that TM isn't a problem on the 98's but on the 00+ it is a necessity to delete it after converter install.

Also, shift pts would have to be raised but that could be done with a HPP3. The main reason I have been waiting on a converter is because I figured I'd need edit to delete torque management. But if I don't have to worry about it and can just get a hpp3 for shift points, I'd be closer to a TC than I thought.

Can anyone help me out with this?

thanks

No, you don't HAVE to. It would definately help, but it's not required. I run a TP4400 in my 98 SS with just my Hypertech for tuning.
Good luck!

You certainly don't have to.I ran a converter for 2 years with TM and stock settings and it seemed okay. Put in a HPP3 to set line pressure at 50%, and liked it better..Had the car dyno-tuned with LS1Edit to delete TM, and speed up the shift times at part and WOT..BAM! woke the car up.
I like it much better now, no more sluggish, slipping shifts..just nice tight shifts.

If you keep the stall at 3200 or lower in a '98, you should have NO problems. Period. With any converter.
If you go higher, you MAY throw slippgae codes; just drive it in D at low speeds/traffic to avoid this.
I'm running a SS3600 and it is fine-no codes, even driving in OD. (And, by the way, IT IS AWESOME!-MUCH BETTER THAN THE 3000 IT REPLACED AND JUST AS DRIVABLE.)
If you don't have a HPP III, you can get a B&M Shift+ for $40 bucks thru Tom Byrne. Hooks up with 2 wires. The lower setting works super for firming up the shifts. The high setting is too severe

BOOSTEDTA- I am selling my Yank SS-3800. It hits HARD!! I am very happy with it, with both street/strip driving. I don't have any times that I can give you, as my car was also given every suspension/motor bolt on + heads/cam at the same time as the convertor. I have been very happy with it, and I have only put about 700 miles on it, and 2 track passes. I would sell it for $800 shipped firm. Let me know... my e-mail is tylerschneider@msn.com

My car is a '98 TA. 299 rwhp/320 ft lbs with 3.23s.
My SS3600 is AWESOME! Couldn't tell they changed it from my old ST3000 after the install; really drivable. Until I mashed it. WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The extra shift extension into 2nd is GRRRRRRREAT!
This thing really gives the ASR a workout. From a stop. From a roll. At the 1-2 shift.
I'm either going to end up in jail or dead; just can't get off the gas now-just too much fun.
No SES lights, either.

I have a vig3200 on a 98 Formula w/ a shiftkit(3washer) and trans cooler.
I've never had to worry about TM on it as there is little to no TM in the stock 98 programming.
On the otherhand, I also have an 02 Formula. Its stock(and staying that way, its a garage queen)
and the TM on it is HORRENDOUS.
I took it to the track for baselines and the upshifts felt like the car was falling on its face.
It 'felt' like the car ran a 14.5!! Got the slip, it ran 13.11 ... Go figure.

The car goes into the shop for more goodies this week. Its also getting a full dyno tune.
So..having said that, they may play with shiftpoints. I'll try to find out what the stock settings
are in the 98.

I'm gonna be having a Vig 3200 installed in my 2000 Camaro Z28. Will I need to worry about TM also? I was hoping that I wouldn't, but it seems to get the best gain I would...

I ran my Vig 3,200 in my 98 SS with stock tuning and a Trans-go shift kit (2 washers).
I never threw codes and I ran a best of 12.6 @ 107 on a 1.63 60'time on Nittos with stock manifolds and a cutout and basic mods.
Now I have added custom Tuning by MCG (St. Louis) along with headers, orp, ASP and now I am down to consistent 12.3-12.4's. The TQ management removal was nice! Also, the best my car has Dyno'd since the converter is 310.9 HP and 380 TQ.
The converter adds TQ through TQ multiplication.

Hey Matt, you dont have to take it out. If you want the best ET though, you're gonna have to. I went 12.7 with my stall. Took out TQ Management and ran 12.5. Fixed up the shift points, added a FTRA and hoosiers and went 12.009. So programming is a big part of improving your ET when you start messing with the drivetrain.

Don't get a HPP3, get a Diablo predator. IF you find that TM is a problem, Predator can remove it. You can change timing in addition to everything that the HPP3 can do. Plus, you can also monitor things like KR and o2 readings on the fly.

For the cost of a Predator, it seems like it would be a better investment to get ls1edit...
