We do 3 speed conversions quite frequently. Haven't had a complaint yet!
Most guys who do this are putting down some real power. It's a logical alternative to the OD units. However, if you wanted to preserve OD you would need to move into a 4L80E.
Lot's of our custoemrs do that as well... problem is it carries a hefty pricetag compared to the 3 speeds.
