I'm confused about 4L80-e's

So my stock 4l603 is slipping and it's time for a rebuild. But if I'm gonna spend money on a transmission I'd rather get something beefier. I want to maintain overdrive but at the same time withstand mid 10s easily. So I guess 4L80 is the way I wanna go. Here's the question though...can I go out to the junkyard and grab one out of an old truck? Will the bolt holes line up? Also, what else is required in the swap? I have a 99 Formula with a 4l60e, factory alluminum driveshaft, stock rearend with 3.23s. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys

Ahh thanks so much. I see it's going to more of a pain than I thought. I was kinda hoping for plug and play lol. Hmm...I wonder does the 4l60e housing change the same year as the 4l80?

It is more work than just plug and play, but it ends up costing similar to a built 4l60e for the junkyard 80 swap. Then later on if you want a built 4l80e it will cost similar to a built 4l60e. It costs more in the end that way, but you have a stronger, more reliable transmission which is what I was going for.

Personally if you are not pushing big power a properly build 60 will work just fine. I feel that after 650-700hp the 80 is a good choice. Couple things to think about are the weight differences in the two transmissions and also the change in the gearing between the two units. In some applications one over the other is beneficial but also the obvious is the drawbacks that they both have. Vince

I did the 80e swap in my TA and it was alot easier than I thought it would be. All I had to do was cut the one "ear" off the the left side of the bellhousing on the 80E and I had to a 3" x 3" notch out the tunnel bracing. The 80e fit in there perfectly.
