Question

I would like to know more about this too. The Corvette folks do this mod all the time and seem to like it. The only real way to get lower temps, though, is to have more air move through the radiator, or get a bigger one. Probably not worth it for a street car.

Engine temperature is regulated by the thermostat, not the radiator. Your radiator is typically lower then stat temp. By running a 160 stat, you lower the temp of the engine which can help keep the cylinder heads cooler therby helping to prevent detonation.

Yes, but it's not the just the thermostat swap alone that does the job, the fans settings have to be altered as well to make it effective.

The thermostat controls how low the temp CAN be after warm-up, not how low it WILL be. Your engine will run at its "natural" temperature, unless more air is moved through the radiator or you get a larger radiator. For example, my Corvette, with a 170* stat, regularly runs at 192* on the highway.

I know the rad has to be able to disapate the heat that the engine is making, but I assumed you had a properly sized/operating radiator. I regularly see ~175-180 degrees with a 160 stat in a vette at cruise with 90 degree ambient depending if AC is on or off. Put a big rad in and you can get it to run almost on the stat @~162-164° at freeway speeds even in 90 degree weather.

If you are running 192 with a 170 stat, what the heck was it running with a stock (192°) stat? I have stock cars that run 192 on the freeway. Do you have your fan temps lowered to match your stat? As LS1LT1 said, you must have the fan temps changed to take advantage of the lower stat.

But to get back to the question, yest it will make a difference if you get the stat and the fan temps changed. Your car will run cooler, and be less prone to detonation. Not such a big issue on a stock car (although the V seems prone to detonation in stock form when it gets hot) but it becomes more helpful when you start adding more power, epsecially forced induction.

Default 160 deg stat

Well, there is a problem. Seems the brand new 160 deg stat I bought but never installed for my 99 SS Camaro Vert won't fit the CTS-V. Any ideas where I can get another stat for the V?

To the best of my knowledge, it is the same as the '04 GTO stat.

Stealth, you're correct. The p/n for the 2004 GTO stat and 2004 CTS-V stat are the same [p/n12581595] Neither the Pontiac or Cadillac parts dept. I called could tell me what temp setting this p/n was, [I am assuming 180 deg], but the fact that they're the same means that an aftermarket 160 stat for the GTO should fit the V. Kudos.
