Default Rounded Oil Drain Plug?

Hey, I managed to slowly round off the oil drain plug on my CTS-V. I've got a new, stainless steel one in the mail, but in the meantime, I'm trying to brainstorm how to get the old one off. Best guess at the moment is trying to file down the edges to exactly 14mm and pray that I can get it close enough to get a secure wrench on it.

Thoughts?

That's probably what's going to have to happen. *sigh* I have this thing about over-torquing bolts. Really gotta stop doing that. I actually managed to shear off 4 of my 24 lug bolts and had to replace them all this summer. Even broke the shells off the stock lug nuts. Sears probably wonders how I keep snapping 3/8" drive hardware. Most of my stuff is now 1/2" drive as a result, but there are a few things that are better handled with 3/8" tools.

Btw, Dactari sheared one or two pieces of 1/2" drive hardware getting his LS2 pulley off. Now that takes some serious strength!

Drill it and get a marine counter (counterclockwise) tap in the center of the bolt. Then get a marine counter bolt and crank left on it. Good Luck sir.

Of course I can. This particular one is really, really stuck. I've been eyeing a set of vice grips for a long time now, and I think I just found the excuse to buy one.

You know, in retrospect, I think I've bought nearly $1000 worth of hand tools to work on this car. Damn. I feel like a mechanical engineer version of Neo in the Matrix when he says, "Guns. Lots of guns" except I fantasize about moving up from my Milwaukee M18 to a V28 and buying a complete set of every short and deep socket on the planet.

Yep. Vice grips. The metal will crush, and you're free to turn. No need to make it harder than it needs to be.

Is there still a head on there? Both snap-on and matco make a bolt removal kit for either drilling out or going on a rounded head to give it some "bite".

why so much torque on everything? Thats not the way joints are designed. Every bolt is not TTY.

No more rounding. Use 1 finger to open drain valve.

Have it on my Superduty, Subaru, Lexus, and obviously the V. Never a drop spilled. I run a hose straight into a used oil container. Best part, you can change the oil hot without burning yourself.
