Default painted!

just a progress report. i painted the old 72 yesterday. 4 coats of summit blue metallic and 3 heavy coat of high solids clear. this is only my second paint job and im no good at setting up a paintgun, so the orange peal is terrible. i new that going in so i put plenty of material on so i could color sand and buff it out. one step closer to being on the road! yeehaa

Part of getting paint/clear to lay smooth is a good gun, proper technique, and proper reducer for the temps its being sprayed at.

Been a long time since I laid any color, but what I remember

i already told u guys that im a dumba$$ at this computer thing so yall have to bear with me on pics. to answer some other questions, i used a cheap starting line gun from summit w a 1.3 tip for the color and the clear. i bought a 2 gun set w a 1.8 tip in the other gun. i experimented with the 1,8 on the high solids clear but didnt like the results at all. i used the wrong activator (mid temp) because, well, i already had it because i really expected to paint months ago. i started at about 8 30 am when the air temp was in the mid 70s and the last coat of clear went on about 3 30 pm 15 mins before a thunderstorm came through at a temp of 96. not ideal conditions at all but some sandpaper and a buffer can work wonders. the other car i painted was my 68 camaro and it looked like a black orange when i started the color sanding /buffing process. now u can read your latest issue of gm high tech performance in the reflection. ill get some help on uploading some pics my son took on his camera soon, but im about to go pick up some 800 and 1500 grt paper and go to work on this thing. thanks guys

Sorry, not busting your *****...

Just less sanding is always better when you're the guy who has to do it

truer words have never been spoken!! i spent 5 hrs today in 102 degree heat index just to color sand the hood and 3/4 of the roof. i just ate supper and me and a budlite are going back out to finish the roof. sometimes it really sux being hard-headed. you would think at 46 yrs old i would have accumulated a little bit of wisdom .

no pics yet, but an update anyway. im buffing tomorrow. i got the last rub of 1500 grt done today! hallaaaalluuyaaa! it took 21 honest hrs to get to this point. little bit of peel left but it looks great. for the novice painter, a word of advice......know your equipment and set it up right! when i was younger, no big deal but im gonna sleep for 2 days when this is done. dont think the guys that do the paint thing for a living dont earn their money. ill post pics soon. thanks , David

I guess you wouldn't want to hear the use air tools

DA with 1000-2500 (or finer) and a light touch.(but as a "novice" I'd be reluctant to do it )

started to go that route but ive done the wet sand thing before, so i went for the safe bet. went through 2 stages of buffing today and the car looked like glass in the garage, so i pulled her outside so my son could see it when he got of the school bus, and low and behold , sanding marks everywhere! look great as long as its not in direct sunlight. just gonna take my time and 2000 grt the whole thing again. its too hot for this crap! well i guess if you do the crime you have to do the time. by the way , thanks for the imput, doug.
