Default alternator question

I have a 2000 trans am and on my alternator, there is a 4 pin harness. It only had 1 red wire going to it, which was going to the PCM. It is my understand that that wire would tell the alternator to charge the battery. I am not using my PCM any longer, so I did some research and found that you can take that wire to a switched 12V power supply, but you have to put a 470 ohm-1/2 W resistor in line with it. I did that and got my car started, and after it ran for about 2 min., I disconnected the positive terminal from the battery to see if the alternator was doing its job and the car shut off. Can someone give me some guidance on what to do with the 1 wire that is in the harness? Thanks in advance

Where is the 12v sent from? Switched from the battery?

I dont know exactly. I know that it is a wire that when I turn my key to the on position, it gets power. It also has power while the motor is cranking. Is it possible that I do not need the resistor?

Have you checked to see if it has 12 while running?

On my f body alt i had to put the 470ohm resistor on pin b i believe and switched 12 volts on pin c in order to get mine to charge.

I bought an indicator light from the parts store, ran wire from pin B to lamp, other side to 12v key on. No resistor needed if you use a lamp, supposed to work with resistor, but I've never tried it.

Alright, so I have a 6 gauge wire coming directly from the starter to the stud on the back of my alternator. I will need to take a wire from the "S" pin to that stud as well. Then from pin "L", I will take a wire and either hook it to the red light that I have that sticks up through my dash, or I can take pin "L" to a switched 12v suplly with the 470 ohm / 1/2 W resistor?
Sorry if I seem confused, I just don't want to hook up my alternator wrong and damage it or something....

Then stop disconnecting the battery with the motor running. You can blow out alternator diodes that way. Use a voltmeter to see if the alternator is working.

Take alt to autozone and have them check it to make sure it even works first imo.
