Default Help with a 5.3 carbed setup

I am redoing a 85 olds cutlass Supreme. I've decided to do a 5.3 LS swap for the engine. I am getting a complete junk yard pull out. Before the engine gets transplanted, I am doing to do a cam swap, use a thinner head gasket for a little boost in compression, headers, and pocket port the heads. I will be using a 200-4r overdrive trans, and 3.73 gears with a posi out back. The car weighs roughly 3500 lbs, and will be used mostly as a street cruiser with the occasional track day.

What cams are recommended for a carbed 5.3 setup? Witch intake are you guys using? The Edelbrock performer RPM or the Victor JR? I will be using a 6010 box to run the coils and timing. What size carbs are you guys using on the 5.3 setups?

What size converter? If you want a hard charger, a larger converter and cam. Alas, using that OD Trans, a set of 4.10s would help that thing get rolling. A custom grind is the best bet, but again, converter size will determine the cam, and the intake.

I have a 3600 lb Chevelle. 5.3, milled / ported 706 heads, 1 7/8 primary headers, dual plane, Quickfuel 750, t400, Hughes 2500hd converter, 3.89 Ford, Tx Speed 220/224 .581/.581 112lsa.

I don't have much time behind the wheel yet and it has not been down the 1/4. Still doing the interior. Good luck with yours.

How thin of a head gasket are you planning on trying to use? I think stock is .051 and pistons tend to be a little out of the hole. I am personally running .040 thick cometics.

The 200R4 is a question mark in the plan because they need to be modded to even handle 300+ hp. A good plan could put you at 425-450hp or even more.

The cam, intake, carb, stall, headers, gears and everything should be matched to your specific goal. Making one change can effect the other (good or bad) and could even make you do a 180'.

Regardless of your plan check with the poster above Mike F at S-K Speed before ordering anything, as he usually beats summit, jegs and a lot of times even the parts classifieds prices. Nothing but good things to say about him and their company.

The 200-4r will be built to take the power. I'm undecided on what size converter to use. I have never ran a ls motor with a stall, especially a Hy-bread like the thing i'm building. I plan on using a .040 head gasket.

A guy I know is offering a 230/232 .595.585 112 lsa cam for cheap. How well would this one work in a carbed 5.3, or should I keep looking?

Would work great if you want to spin it to 7000.

Try the edelbrock 2216 if absolute all out power is not a goal. It will spin to 7000 but that will be after peak power. It is 230/237 on a 110 with .540 lift. Not bad for a mid 300$ cam.

I might have to look into that one. What stall is recamended? My 200-4r has a 2500 stall in it. Will that be enough, or does it need to be steeper?

Will work, a 3500 would be great, but if the hole shot is not importane them don't worry about it. If you want it to launch you will need a larger unit.

Hard launching is not really a priority. This car will mostly be a street cruiser, and maybe some runs down the local track when they have test and tune day. A GM ASA cam was also suggested to me by a couple of guys. They said it would work good with a carb setup since its ground on 110 lsa. Thoughts? Thanks for all the help. I have had a fuel injected LS1 before, and did a good amount of modding on it. This is the first time i've gone carbed on a LS motor.

The ASA would be really great for your converter. Not optimal but will work for what you are looking for.

^^^^ This exactly. Especially being a 5.3 there is very little out ther for carb stuff on them that will work well out of the box.
Spend the extra time and a few dollars and get a custom cam set-up for your application. You will be alot happier in the end.

We have had 2 shop cars that were LS carb swapped vehicles and theyboth performed considerabley better when we swapped in a carb specific cam.
