Default tuning insight

I'm a new to tuning, just put a 5.3 in my brothers 71 C10 using 6010, edelbrock performer, pro form 750 and the engine has a Thunder Racing 220/220 .551/.557 112lsa, stage 1 WCCH 706 heads, decked .30. I've read the tuning sticky and still kinda confused. What determines when you need to advance or retard the timing? How do you determine when you need to play with the MAP? I've tried setting it at 15* 0-600, 22* 600-1000 and ramping it to 32* from 1000-3000 and flat lining from there. It responded well down low but roughly mid range (3000+) it seemed to bog and then towards 5k it'd pick up.

Does it bog around 3k in every gear or just under a high load/high gear situation? What's your compression? What gas? To me this kinda seems timing related since it happens right when you hit peak timing but I could be wrong (it happens alot to me). Have you played with the timing any? Are you able to moniter your afr? Just throwing ideas out there.

The bog could be your carb going lean.

Every gear. CR IIRC is 10:1, pump gas 91, I've played with the pills and it more so gets worse with more advance but then again retarding it doesn't seem to help a lot either...I don't currently have a wide band on it. I suppose I could get one. I was hoping to find a good base with the pills and adjust from there using the PC.

If it didn't help goin either way with the timing I would definitely look into gettin a wideband on there. Until then your really just chasing your tail with guessing. You could pull a plug an get a vague idea of what the engine is doing. But that isn't exactly ideal without brand new plugs and holding at the same throttle position for a pull. Your call

Ended up being a fuel issue. Threw on a bigger pump and set fuel pressure at 7.5 lbs and it runs great.
