Do you have the software loaded on a laptop? Do that and get it to communicate with the box by plugging the laptop into the box..
Plug the #1 chip in the box and this will give you a base line to start with and adjust a few simple things from there. Keep the timing around 28-36 degree's. Rev hi is your rev limiter keep it around 7500 for now.

Be sure to pull the pill before you finish the tune. The pills will over ride any custom tune you tried to install.

Motor/trans combo and build will help a lot with recommendations.

I always hate to see guys get timing advice when they have not even shared the details of their build. I also hate to see people start out with their testing at higher total timing settings. Too little timing within reason will not get you in trouble, but too much timing can do some damage.

Do a search in this section for timing threads. There are many great discussions on this topic to learn from including a sticky that could probably be re-titled to include 6012 users.

Default bad 6012 box

Have any of you had a 6012 box go bad on you? MSD. says they have no problem with them. I am on the 3rd one in my car that only has a couple hours run time on it.

Only negative things I've heard about the 6012 ended up being user error. But then again, so were most all of them. Check, Check, and Recheck your grounds. Then when your done with that. Check and make sure you have at least 12 volts.

what do you guys think a good timing curve would be? from idle to at least 6500 RPM

Also do i need a map sensor? some say yes, and some no, what are the benefits to a map sensor, I do not have any boost or any sort, just engine, thanks

28* from 800-7000 would be a baseline tune I guess ?
I have a MAP but only use it to read vacuum, does nothing to my timing. Just be sure to zero it out in program even if it's not hooked up.
MAP will give better MPG's when cruising is all.

Theres some videos on Youtube from MSD. They are very generalized though, but at least give you an idea of how to work your way through the software.
