Default Help with solid flat tappet 5.3

I'm building a 5.3 sbe for IMCA modified. Rules require iron heads and solid flat tappet cams.

Looking at a standard SBC solid lifter compared to the ls7 lifter, the oil feed portion of the lifters mostly overlap. Obviously the pushrods will be much longer as the SBC lifters have a 1.88 cup height.

Wondering if anyone else has done this or at least tried. Any help or info would be great.

I'll give you a bump but can't say I have ever read about a flat tappet cam in an LS motor.

You will almost certainly need a custom cam grind, don't think a roller profile will translate to non-roller lifters, so I would call a cam builder and see what they recommend.

I would check out the competition and see if any of them are running LS motors.

There was a engine masters contestant a few years ago who did a similar flat tappet build. You might Google that and find the builders info.

I know different strokes for different folks, but could you explain why you would go to an LS block vrs a gen 1 ? I know the gen 1 block has better windage control with the oil. World did a special block/crate engine package a few years ago to exploit that . They put Gen 3 heads on a gen 1 block and made 30+more HP across the board vrs the all gen 3 set up.
Im sure you have a good reason. Id just like to know what it is,

I talked to Kip at cam motion yesterday and he said he's had them ground before on a 8620 core with a different finish on it. He and another engine builder also said the standard SBC lifters will work. Didn't ever ask about what lobes he uses.

Tried searching for the engine masters build but didn't have any luck.

The reason we're trying the LS is because many of the tracks around here are dry slick and with the 8" IMCA tire you really can't put that much power to the ground. The 604 crate wins a whole lot of races with only 400hp. I think with a sbe 5.3 we can get more than enough power up top to use on the straights and not over power the tire coming out of the corners. And of course, reliability and cost.

Gotcha . I knew there was probably a good reason. Good luck with the racing !

Thanks! We're going to give it a shot anyway. I'll start a build thread when we get more parts gathered.
