Default Here to learn

Like the title states, I am here to learn and ask questions.
We have a 1992 Camaro with a TBI 305 for power in my 19 year old daughters 1st car.
So far we have just been trying to remove the curses put in place by the previous owners and putting things back together the way they should have been.

Here we are right at the beginning when we purchased the car for her at the guys house.

Going back to Oregon on the interstate bridge.

Them Duke boys seemed to have rallied this poor car through a chase or two.
That poor little exhaust pipe has been slammed into the bottom of the floor pan enough to dent the floor up in places.
And yes, the PO nerd used JB Weld and a Truly can to fix an exhaust leak...

The bigger the booger the better the weld right?

Then we have the beauty of the dashboard speaker install.
Just use a cut off wheel and cut out that pesky stuff until your speakers fit in there.
Then just set the speakers in the new hole and put the dash pad right back over them...

So that is where we are.
Fixing sins from previous hacks.

Eventually I would be interested in perhaps swapping in an LS power plant and need to learn about them.
That is why I am here.

Worry not friend.
We have been hard at work on it for a while.
It now has most of a fully welded 3 inch exhaust under it from the cat back.
I have replaced the cat with a new Magnaflow unit that is on V-Bands for simple removal for "test" purposes.
Since it is not my car project, it still wears the stock manifolds and Y pipe that we have connected too.
When she has the cash and want for upgrading that part, she can pay for it and we will help her install it.

This guy is terrible at stereo installs and this is the pile of wire that was removed just from his terrible work.

This last weekend we removed a complete dash from a same year donor in the junkyard.

It is already a much happier car and we will continue making it better as we go.

Congratulations! That's a cool family project!

Sweet looks like the car is much better happier with the new owners!

FWIW - lot of times in my experience of owning a 3rd Gen's for ~38 years and being around 3rd Gen's, they are excellent cars but a certain type of prior owners often neglect these areas:

pinion seals often leak

fuel filters seldom get changed

cooling fan or cooling fan relays don't work and need replaced

hatch & hood lifts usually need replaced

rear & front struts are seldom replaced by prior owners.

Wishing you & daughter the best with her Camaro and looking forward to updates.

- Makes sense as it has been wired to the ignition on and always runs. Also on the list.

- These are actually still working on both ends.

- These were all semi recently replaced on the car.

Thank you very much as we are having fun so far correcting the sins of the past.
Currently the interior is mostly removed for cleaning and fresh wiring done the correct way.
She is ready to drive the wheels off it, but knows that this stuff is needed to make things good for a long time coming.

Awesome ride! I've owned a few 3rd Gens ( Camaros and Firebirds ) and I've always wanted another. Just a heads up, if the seats aren't in that great of shape, 4th Gen seats bolt right in place of them. You can even get a 4th Gen dash to fit, but that takes more work. Great project car!

Outstanding! Don't let the TBI naysayers deter you from keeping the system intact, especially if you plan on keeping the engine stock. I would however, invest in a CD copy of the factory service manual (Bishko makes them) as it has EXCELLENT diagnosis info that Haynes or Chilton do not.

Heres the thing with TBI it's hard to make big power on. But, left alone and in more or less stock configuration the dang things will run reliably for multiple hundred thousands of miles. So, if you want a reliable start every time and rock n roll car they are hard to beat. Its an educated carb.

I plan to leave the TBI on the car for now as it will be her daily commuter and she doesn't need big power just yet.
It has plenty of pep and it will already leave black marks everywhere.

Just need to swap the rear out for a Gen 4 with LSD and better gears.

FYI, the 4th Gen rears are a direct swap EXCEPT they are 3" wider than a 3rd gen. This means a swap to 4th Gen wheels, which will necessitate wheel spacers up front. And I cannot stress enough that if you are going to run spacers, purchase very high quality ones. You don't want a spacer failing. The other option ( which if it were my kid's car, I would do ) is to swap the guts from a 4th Gen rear into the 3rd Gen rear. Eliminates the need for spacers up front. It's a little more involved, but it's a safer option.
