so lets say a car is running 11.7 in the 1/4 mile and another car is running 12.4 in the 1/4 mile , about how many car lengths would the 11.7 car be ahead?

phew... thats a tough one. Lot of things to consider there. Who has the better launch, who pulls harder midrange, etc.
Maybe we can break it down this way. Lets assume the trap speed is a 120 mph. Thats about 174 feet per second. So a .7 dif E.T. would figure to about 100 feet.
Quite a bit in other words.

As mentioned above, closure rate of mph, hook and efficiency of drivetrain all figures in. Usually an average car length is about .10-.15, so I'd say around 5-7 car lengths.
