Default De-Code a vin on a 70 Camaro?

I'm looking at a 70 HO Z28 with black stripes and an auto. Don't know a lot about it, but it appears to have the Z28 spoiler (the big 3 piece one) Car has been completly restored. Looks great. A few parts that are not the right ones for the car. 3rd gen firebird shift lever, later 2nd gen center console. Not sure of tranny or engine yet.

The car would be a driver & not a show car or investment. Probably put an ls1 in it and drive it like I stole it.

Is there a site to decode the vin? Where is the vin on a SBC block?

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks, There is a lot of info to go through, but that helps a lot. I really don't care if it's a clone or not, but I would like to know what the engine is. But like I said, if I buy it, I will do an ls1or2 swap.

Go get the gang stamped code on the right passenger side of the engine. Right by the cylinder head. If the engine has been honed hopefully this is still readable.

Do you know if the letters HP appear inside the bellhousing part of the block and on the inside of the heads?

If it is not gang stamped either something did a sloppy job of making up a code or you have a "weird" heh non production engine.

That's not correct. You are referring to the engine code that is stamped on the passenger side of the block just forward of the head, if the engine has been rebuilt and the block was decked it's probably not there anymore. The cowl tag if it is original will tell you what size engine originally came in the car but it will not tell you if the engine is original to the car.
