85 Monte Carlo SS Swap
Okay, I'm working with a 85 Monte SS.It has a tired 305 that is powerless. I'm building this car to go on the road on cruises and occasionally to the track. I picked up a LQ9 from an Escalade for 950 dollars. Decided to leave the bottom end stock for now since it's a low mileage engine.Used the CTS-V oil pan,and using BRP LS G Body coated headers. I'm going carbed for now since I don't have F.I. in the budget. Using the Holley 750 vac sec., The Eddie Victor Jr. intake, and using the MSD 6010 to power the coils. Went with the Comp XR275HR cam with patriot gold dual springs/titanium retainers. Undecided on heads, rockers and type/length of pushrods. This is where you all come in. I need help to finish the engine. Would like to stay around the 10.5-11to1 compression ratio. Looking for 400-450HP.
*Should I stay with the 317's and get them ported?
*Should I go with either 241 or 243 's? ported?
*What length pushrods do I need to run?
*What would be the ideal rocker type to run with this setup?
All help is greatly appreciated....

Call Texas Speed and see what they recommend for the heads. Explain to them what your plans are for the car and they can set you up with a good set of heads. Send your stock rockers to Harlan Sharp to be have their mod done to them. You won't need expensive aftermarket rockers. The HS mod will make them dependable. You will probably need stock length pushrods but it's always good to check. A length checker is only around $20. Determine the proper length and then order some jardened pushrods. Mine are from Thunder Racing.

It's a rather easy swap and in all honesty the injected route would be just as cost effective as the carb.....

Sorry to kinda hi-jack, but you said you had 3rd gen power seats? I take it you mean 3rd gen f-body seats... I have an 86 Monte SS, with a factory bench seat. I'm looking to get rid of the bench and go with buckets in my SS before I do a motor swap. I'm pretty sure the seat brackets from either a 3rd or 4th gen f-body won't bolt up, so what brackets did you use?

Nice Monte! In my opinion, I would go with some ported 243's. There are some good budget heads out there that won't break the bank. Call up a few of the sponsors like Texas Speed, Livernois, and Patriot and speak with them, go with the one you feel comfortable with. You can also do a search for "budget heads" and see which ones appeal to you the best. As for pushrods, you'll have to get a pushrod length checker and check the length out yourself. The LS motor's are very finicky when it comes to pushrod length and has to be checked for each application to be safe. For rockers I would reuse the stockers and just have someone do the Harland Sharp mod on them so they won't spill their needle bearings. They will be more reliable. Hope this helps and good luck with your project! Post up some pics as you go.

Hi, I am thinking of the LS engine swap in my 88 monte ss also. but I am totally confused about these ls motors. I am looking at a 06 tahoe 5.3L right now, but not sure if it is DBW. if it is, will I be able to swap out the throttle body and make it a cable driven? and even with the cable driven, will I still have to get the gas padel from the donor car? ..tks
