Default quiet high flow mufflers

I am looking for some info/advice on some quiet high flow mufflers. I would not be opposed to stock mufflers. What about Cadillac mufflers? I am putting these on a 70 Chevelle so I would need offset/offset or maybe I could do front offset rear center. My thought is a very quiet exhaust via a pypes 3" kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pypes...Q5fAccessories with electric cutouts. I kind of like the stealth factor of the coutouts and there's nothing like open headers.

This may be what you are looking for. You can listen to this muffler on their website and it is rated as being quiet with good flow. I would definitely get the offset/offset in this style to make the most of the internal flow directors.
http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.php?muffler=superturbo
http://www.summitracing.com/search/P...o&Ns=Price|Asc

A line from their add..."Dyno tests prove it--Dynomax's Super Turbo mufflers are the closest you can get to running an open pipe, but a lot quieter."
The results (shoot out) were in one of the hot rod magazines quite a few years ago. There may have been some notable improvements to flow with newer muffler designs but I doubt that you will find a quieter muffler that flows this well.

I have a Magnaflow on mine, it's pretty quiet & seems to flow pretty well. When I had my exhaust done, I asked the shop for the quietest 3" performance muffler they had - and sometimes it's even too quiet for me...

As far as 3" mufflers go, I'd say Borla Pro XS or Hooker Max-Flow.

I have the dynomax turbo on my car they are the 20 inch mufflers and they are dual 2 1/2" and they are quiet but i still get alot of compliments from everyone that has riden inside the car. I dont have to blast the radio to hear it. I am going to put the same ones on my next project. I also have a x pipe and i think that quiets it down a little.

Actually I just finished hanging new exhaust on my car today. Old system was camaro cats 2.25" duals with an X pipe and 40 series flowmasters. That was pretty loud and had a horrible drone at 55mph. For the new system I have the camaro cats, 2.5" pipes an x pipe and knock off magnaflow mufflers that I bought off fleabay. It is MUCH quieter. I was worried a little bit when I looked at the mufflers............you can actually look right through the muffler from one end to the other. But they are still a lot quieter than the flowmasters. Now the loudest thing at idle is my fuel pump. They don`t have quite as mean of a sound on accel as the flowmasters did, but they don`t drone at 55 either.

I would also put an x pipe in the system......It was a big PITA to get one to fit in my exhaust system both times, but everything I have read says that they quite the exhaust down a lot more than just duals or even duals with an H pipe.

I concur...I read the Hot Rod test several years ago. Make sure to get the LONG ones (20" rather than 15" case)--the shorter ones are not as quiet. I had to modify the floor in my Camaro in order to fit them in, but it was worth it--they are nice and quiet. And...they are relatively inexpensive.

I have the hooker max flow mufflers on my 67 chevelle with a 6.0 3" mufflers that are 22 inch long case . they are the most quiet mufflers you will find that have no restriction. Mine are almost too quiet. My kids dont mind riding in it so it must be pretty quiet.

The mufflers that I used were flowsound stainless offset/offset 2.5" from racepartsdirect on fleabay.

When I first wanted to do my exhaust I wanted to run magnaflow mufflers with stainless pipes......but then I found out that it was a 6-8 week wait for them to bend me a kit in stainless instead of the aluminized kits that they stock. Since I daily drive the car and my current exhaust had rusted off and I had capped one side off with a soup can I figured I needed exhaust sooner than 6-8 weeks. I wasn`t going to spend 90 each to get magnaflows since I was stuck running crappy aluminized pipe anyway. It was ~25 a piece for the cheapest aluminized mufflers I could find and the flowsounds were only $35 each plus 21 shipping, so I figured I would give them a try.

so you see, everybody has an opinion on a diff muffler, lol
what i do anymore is build the ex. system using header flanges welded to the mufflers, then buy some cheap Summits, weld the flanges on them, and only takes about 30 mins. to swap out from noise to quite
would be neat to see another test, same car, swap out a bunch of mufflers and do noise and dyno test on all
of course, noise to one person is quite to another

Thanks G-body. They have a thicker case than I wanted. I have been eyeballing the flowmaster 50 for a project since it has a 3" thick case. But I was hoping to find something similar for less $$$

the magnaflow 12267 is a nice 3 in 2.5 out muffler thats on the quiet side. here is mine welded into my stock factory catback.

*edit* thats the part no for a 93-02 fbody muffler that you can basically drop in. i don't know what the part no would be for your specific application

That sounds nice, a nice low rumble. Does it cackle at all? Also since I won't be running converters (1970 car) I think it may be a touch louder on mine. Also is the 1 muffler or 2? Thanks

I don't think it crackles that much. maybe once or twice on a higher rpm rev but i think my old muffler did that a bit too so it probably has more to do with my car than the muffler. i've heard that just means there was some unburnt fuel popping in the cat.

it is 1 muffler. 1 in (3 inch) and 2 out (2.5) it's specific to the 93-02 fbody but i think you could find a comperable muffler in the size/shape you need at

http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/u...asp?shape=oval

my actual pipes are a little smaller than the muffler inlet/outlet so they had to adapt the muffler to the pipes.

Don't even bother watching the engine test stand muffler comparison that's on YouTube. The guys swap out about a dozen mufflers and rev up the engine to let you hear the difference. Problem is the are sticking them directly on headers with out any mid pipe, crossover h/x pipe to any tail pipes. Best bet is to go to several exhaust shop and listen to v8 vehicles they install mufflers onto. That way you can hear them in person before you buy anything.
