Default 98 GMC Sonoma ls1 swap

If I decide to swap my stock 98 Sonoma for an ls1 corvette motor (hopeful 98 as well), do i need to buy a new tranny also? I've read many forums, but can't find a direct answer. I've never swapped before, so be very detailed please. Thanks
