Default Gen III/VI Chevy G30 VAN Conversion ?

Has anyone tried to stick a Gen III / VI into a 2nd Generatin Chevy Full size VAN ?.. I have a 79' Pathfinder converted 4x4 One Ton (G30) Chevy Van that is in need of a engine rebuild..

Thinking a late model Express VAN (LQ9/LQ4 w/4L60/80e) will make a better choice.. but not sure of the engine bay on the Gen II (71-96).. as it is tight as is.. and the Gen III is maybe 2" wider !?

I would like find a totaled Donner and make it Cali Smog legal by pulling out everything I need.

Anyone ?

(I didn't see any conversion/hybrids section in the Performance Truck forum..)

I have a LQ4 6.0/4L80E from a 2006 G2500 that is going into my 1983 G20. I have already test fit it into my 1992 donor van that I had. With the coil packs relocated the top of the LQ4 is no wider than the 350 TBI that is currently in it. Keep in mind that the 1982 and up fullsize vans have a wider dog house area than the pre-1982 vans due to the introduction of the 6.2 in 1982. Around 1990 GM eliminated the passenger side offset on the engine that the older vans had. You can use the adapter mounts that bolt to the LS1 and bolt to the traditional small block frame pads. The crossmember from the 1992 G30 bolted right into place with the 4L80E. I was able to lot drive the van with 6.0/4L80E in it. It would GO. The darn G30 Cargo van is only like 5,000 lbs empty. The LSx minus the A/C compressor fit great in the 1992 G30 donor van(350TBI/4L80E stock). I have a 1997 Express with the 5.7 vortec in it, which has the same engine cover/engine compartment as 2003+ vans with the Gen3 engine. The 5.7 in the 1997 is a tight fit.

The 454 is an easy fit into the 1982+ vans.

Laying in the corner of my garage is my 2006 LQ4 6.0. It started out with 340 HP and is getting a 224/224 @ .050 cam, a 2,600 rpm stall torque converter, long tube headers, and HP tuning software to tune it with.
