Default 4.8 to 5.3 truck

I know this isn't a much of a hybrid. But I have a buddy that has a 99 gmc sierra that has the 4.8 in it. In the midst of changing a knock sensor he twisted of the boss that the knock sensor threads into. So block is trash now. He was going to but a 5.3 in it. What all does it require to put a 5.3 in it? Is it just a tune and be done? Thanks for any help. I know they are essentially the same motor minus stroke. I did search but couldn't come up with a solid answer and also searched google.

Like you said, its the same motor with different stroke. Should be just a direct swap as far as I know.

direct swap everything over. But don't even bother with the 5.3 from the 4.8. Go for the 6.0.

i second the 6.0, it wont cost much more if anything, may even be less.

ok ill rephrase it, around here you can get a 6.0 for the same or cheaper than a 5.3. i just looked it up to make sure i wasnt being retarded

What trans does he have might need a crank spacer as well with the 5.3L.

5.3 here is 450$ intake to oil pan. lq4? 99-02 non- aluminum headed 6.0 goes for 900$ lq9? 03-05 with low miles (40k-60k) miles is 1100$, or high miles (100k+) for 900$. So... He might go ahead and get the 6.0.

6.0 dumdumdum but 5.3's are fine also. ive got both lol.
