Will the 5.3 or 6.0 or ls1 fit in this car.
I would prefer to go with the lq engines due to cost and would likely use the 4l60e unless we go with the LQ4.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,

yes they will fit no problem... a 460 is much bigger than any ls motor and they put those in there all the time
as per actually doing it... im more ofa vintage stay vintage guy and keep it ford with a nice 32v cobra motor or something... but it would be sweet

I did some measuring when I had my 66 Fastback.
I had a LS1/4l60e sitting on the floor next to the car.
In my opinion the shock towers would need to be cut and the trans tunnel as well.
The 289/302 motors are quite narrow and short deck. Long tube headers just clear the shock towers.
A Heidt front end kit would make life much easier.
You don't know how close that LS1 came to going in the Mustang.

I'm actually doing a LM7 5.3 swap into my '68 Mustang coupe. My trans tunnel is bigger than yours and the shock towers are wider I believe. I sat the motor into the engine bay tonight to see where everything would line up. Copy and paste the links for pics....they too big to post.

It's not fully seated into position. I just wanted to see, approximatly, where everything would line up. That's the stock truck oil pan BTW. It hits the steering linkage. I'll be getting an F-Body oil pan and hoping for the best!

I think you will have a hard time. To be clear a 460 or a 4.6L will not fit in a 65/66 mustang. Mustangs couldn't fit big blocks until 67'. Im putting a 5.3L into my 65, I chopped the shock towers out and put in a Mustang II suspension. It will be awhile down the road though until I'm near completion, college and living 45 minutes from my car tend to slow progress! (Plus the fact Im redoing everything at once??!)

so... it looks like the 68 or so would be needed to make one of these engines/trannies work. rats I really like the 65/66 body style but would not want to cut it up that much. I am guessing the ford stuff (modern) is to big as well.
Thanks for all the info and pics!

As it has been said the LS series is a quite a bit wide for the 65/66 Mustang, the 351 Ford is a pretty tight squeeze for the exhaust.
If it were my car I would get one of the various kits to replace the front suspension (the original Mustang front suspension is a joke anyway), that way you lose the shock towers and gain the needed room.

64 1/2 65 66 hard to fit any thing more than a small block without cutting
67,68 fitt f.e. motors which you had to loosen motormounts to change plugs. i think 69 and up are alot easier to work with
