Default LS1 Header Tube Size

Its looking like the only "economical" solution to exhaust for my 66 Nova/LS1/Checkered clip is to make some headers (I don't want shorties). So my question is tube size - I haven't done a lot of research yet but it appears that 1-7/8" is the size of choice? Are these tubes too large for a relatively stock LS1/LS6 or do the heads breathe so well that it is an appropriate size? And looking down the road, are they ok for a healthy build? -Bob

I'd say 1-3/4 is plenty for what you need.

This reminds me of a local header builder I had the chance of talking with. His name is Ed (google "headers by Ed") Very interesting guy. If you dare, call him at 612-729-2802 and ask his thoughts on primary tube sizes.

1-3/4 is more what I was thinking also. Yeah I know about "Ed" - have a bunch of his literature from way back.

If you are so inclined...
Here's some math to use to do some interesting calcs.. I think you'll find 1 5/8 is a good choice for all except the real "hairy dogs"..

I called him about 3 weeks ago looking for information about what parts he offered since his website is down. Biggest mistake I've made in YEARS. I got no answers to my questions but what I did get 45 minutes of listening to him **** and moan about the magazines, tell me how great he is, how stupid people are, and how great he is, and how great he is, AND how great he is. I also got to listen to him telling I don't know WTF I'm doing and how I should do what he says or have him build what he wants for me without even listening to what I was looking for. It got to be quite funny after a while. Since I was at work I just muted the phone and myself and a couple of gearheads I work with got a good laugh out of listening to his rant. What a freak. The one answer I got out of that phone call was knowing who I'm not buying anything from. Just my .02; spare yourself the pain of dealing with this clown.
