How far into the pilot bearing should the input shaft ride when judging whether or not an extended bushing is necessary/required?

I just want to thank Monte LS3 for a great recap on bushings. I'm currently into an LS- T56 behind a 2pc. Gen1 383. I'm learning more about fitments than I wish I ever had to.
