visible difference between 5.3 and 4.8
Need to know an easy way to tell the difference. Is there any markings on the motor that will be a tell tale sign... i.e. casting number, head number, head gasket stamp or something like that. Going to the junkyard and need to be sure and get a 5.3 since the motors are often marked incorrectly.
Thanks

The last 8 digits of the VIN are stamped onto the block on the bellhousing flange above the oil filter, close to the parting line where the engine/transmission split near the trans. dowel alignment pin. If you had a friend at a dealership, they could find out exactly what vehicle and engine it was from with those 8 digits, or the wrecking yard might keep the title for verification purposes. Without the engine apart, I don't know of an easier way. The only difference is internally I'm afraid.
4.8 has a different crankshaft, longer rods and flattop pistons, whereas earlier Gen III 5.3L's had dished pistons. Newer Gen IV style 5.3L's with the 243/799 casting heads have flattops now.

easiest way is to just take out a spark plug and get a piece of a metal coat hanger and measure the stroke of the engine,, turn over the engine till you reach bdc then put a mark on the coat hanger at the base of the spark plug hole, slowly turn over the engine by hand and when you reach tdc place another mark on the coat hanger . measure the distance between the marks and you will know if you have a 4.8 or 5.3
stroke for the 4.8L is 83mm (3.268˝)
stroke for the 53L is 92mm (3.622˝)
so if you measure less than 3.5" you have a 4.8L, more than 3.5" you have a 5.3L
