Default truck gauge cluster

just an idea i have been brainstorming.
i need a speedo for my swap which is 86 el camino lq4/4l80e.
well as of right now i do not have my gauges working. was planning on purchasing aftermarket gauges.

but was wondering about retrofitting an instrument cluster out of late model truck into my car.

has anyone done this? does it receive its info from teh BCM harness?

like i said just brain storming ideas and wonder if anyone has tried it. and if you did what all parts were necessary?

I've got a truck cluster sitting here too and was wondering the same thing! I hope someone will chime in here!

Good question! GM varies as to whether they hardwire the speedo and tacho directly from the ECM, or they run the data direct via the BCM and CAN, or a mix of both.

Really the best way to tell is get the schematic for the truck in question and check whether the speedo/tacho are fed direct...or not .

Yep, if the cluster just uses sensors for the data its an easy swap (IE: a 93 firebird cluster like were using on my brothers car) but if it uses serial data communications like a 98 grand prix well then its going to take some effort....over my head.
