Default over heating ???

The temperature rises to 220 with the fan on while the car is just idling, . The radiator is from the 85 camaros it is also aluminum. I am sure its not the radiator. The heater outlets are looped to each other, and the head coolant hose is were the stock LS1 cars have it. I filled the radiaor with a gallon of dex cool then started the engine without radiator cap. The gauge is new and is plumbed to the water pump outlet hose. The car has not been driven yet. What do you guys think is going on here. I read a post about air being traped in the block, could that be It. How long would it take to get rid of all the air.

220 in my car is a normal occurence in traffic. Fans don't come on until just after 210. I have a brass radiator from an 85 V6 camaro. If I manually set the fan on high, it'll come down to 180. I haven't been too worried about that.

However, I have had problems with air in the heads when doing work that involves draining coolant. I have my vent tube plumbed to the upper hose. I am wondering if that is part of my problem.

My "technique" is to run it until the thermo opens (rad cap off), then squeeze a bit on that upper hose while making sure there is enough coolant. This seems to work fairly well.

I could let mine sit in the same spot for and hour and it wouldnt see pass 210. It may be your radiator; i know i put over 2 gallons in mine. The manual calls for 15quarts. Im not sure of the deminsions of a stock radiator. If there is a carquest near by they can give you the diminsions(other places probably could too).

If its a vent problem drain the coolant. Fill radiator with motor off. Squeze the top radiator hose, repeat till coolant doesnt drop. Start the car and keep adding coolant till its full.

p.s.- I probably wouldnt worry about it to much if it doesnt exceed 220. It will run cooler while your driving.

If you have the stock thermostat and have not used LS1_Edit to change the fans this is about right.

Is your vent tube connected? Sometimes air can be trapped and the vent tube can relieve this.
