Can you just swap out your OEM mechanical speedometer for say a autometer electronic speedo and connect the two?

How did this work out for you? I have a cable x box I bought a few years ago and haven't installed it yet.

I'm leaning towards one of shiftworks tailshaft kits to eliminate all the electronics of the cable x box and have a direct transmission to speedo cable connection...but I am having trouble with the $525 selling price for one of these. I can find a lot better stuff to spend $525 on since I already own a cable x box

Is there anyone else selling a transmission tailshaft kit similar to shiftworks at a better price?
