Default How close can the MAF be to the throttle body?

I recently purchased an LS7 air intake from a C6 Corvette Z06. I would like to install it in my Studebaker with the LS1 motor.

I will not be usng the LS7 MAF, but the original LS1 MAF (3 5/8 OD). My thinking is to put it inline between the LS7 air bridge and the LS1 throttle body, unlike the C5 which has the MAF between the air bridge and the air cleaner.

I understand the LS1 MAF will be a restriction, but no more than it was in the original C5 setup. Perhaps later on an LS7 MAF may be acquired.

My question is how close can the LS1 MAF be to the LS1 throttle body with out being a problem? Is there a disruption to uniform air flow sensing in the MAF by being too close to the throttle plate? I estimate that the MAF screen will be about 2 inches away from the front of the throttle body opening.

Here is the air box that the front end of the air intake will drop into.

This is the engine bay with the radiator support, minus the radiator. The radiator will lean back towards the engine.

Im not an expert by any means, but guys on here recomend it closer to the air cleaner without getting oil from the filter on it, but yet Street and Performance sells some that bolt right onto the filter that mounts right on the throttle body..

Im sure there is an ideal area but apparently it wont hurt it where you mount it...

Yes there is. I've seen/read that the MAF should be 5" or more away from the TB in order to avoid reversion issues - but naturally, I can't find that link now...

BTW - SWEET project!

Yep, basically what was stated above......there is no good answer. I see a lot of them being put right up against the throttle body and I really haven`t heard people complaining that it seemed to be causing problems. However I have also heard that you should have 6" to a foot between the 2 or else you might have issues. The bottom line is you prettymuch have to try it out on your combo to see if its going to be a problem.

It shouldnt matter. If you look at OEM cars, some are even closer than LS1 cars

Northstar caddy's bolted the MAF directly to the TB

Mid 90's 3.8's actually had the MAF inside the TB

I've read 6" to 12" like stated above, and I'm sure there is some differences between stock screened, descreened and ported ones, but if you have it tuned I'm sure you can eliminate any issues.
