72' C/10 pickup
I recently purchased a 1972 C/10 pickup with a under 25,000 original miles. I'm planning on yanking the OE motor and putting it in storage incase the truck ever gets put back to original. I have access to pretty much any Chevy motor I want,as my machinist has been working with and been sponsored by GM for many years. I'm trying to figure out if I want to stick with a carburated powerplant or go to F.I. I'd like to put a modern twist on this build, but I'm a 68yr. old Chevy guy and have been since the 1950's.
My son has a turbocharged 4cyl. car that turns close to 1,000hp. Through helping him with the build I've realized how nice and easy it is to work on a fuel injected motor,so I'd like to build a turbocharged fuel injected small-block for this truck. Like I said,I'm an old school Chevy guy. I've been a mechanic for over 40yrs but there are new technologies out there that simply leave me scratching my head.
Anyone have any input? Trying to figure out what motor I want to go with.
I was toying with the idea of running a 265ci LT-1. I've got one out of a NYC cab. My machinist has put one in his drag car and it made good power on pump gas and turned out some nice RPM's as well.Well, there you have it. What do you guys think?

I would go with the LSx platform over any LT1 platform, the opti is the deathbead of the LT1s.
this place is full of LSx swaps in just about anything you can think of......
I am in the middle of a 6.0/4l80e swap in my 71 LWB.

another vote for ls based.
the oe crankshaft has the capacity to support over 800bhp in its stock form. with forced induction. the rods and pistons will need to upgraded at those levels.
the oe crank and the block itself lend to serious horsepower without band aid parts like other engine platforms.

we've got a LT1 in my '71, but only reason because was at the time the LSX platform was still pretty expensive for a low milage/crate ls1 and t56.
now they are a dime a dozen, parts are way cheaper. no reason to not go lsx now.

If it truely has less than 25k on it, and is in good shape, then personally I'd leave it alone. You didn't say if it was a long bed or short, so I'm going to assume long and long bed '72 Chevy trucks are everywhere, however low mileage survivor trucks are not. But on the other hand, if it was used on a farm and has had a hard 25k put on it, and it needs restoring then by all means I'd put an LSX of some sort in it in a heartbeat.
I'm in the middle of building a short bed '72 with an LQ4/4l80e.
