Default Should I pass on this used 5.3?

I am looking at slowly gathering parts to eventually replace my 454/th350 with a lsx/4l60e.

I found this 5.3 for sale about an hour away, but am wary and need others advice if I should pass.

"1999 5.3 motor/ex manifolds.coil packs,brain,ect. 45,000 miles 1st $500.00 takes it. I have had it sitting on a pallet,
covered with a tarp for a couple of years now. the smog pumps, brain,
fan blade, alternator(still turns over), throttle body(still opens/closes)
etc. are all there."

$500. I am not interested in any kind of rebuild to start, I want to try and start on the cheaper side and then modify as I feel needed.

What say ye?

It's been sitting outside with some of the exhaust valves open so you know it's going to have some cylinder wall rust on the open ones, even if it was covered.

Default lsx

i would pass to third that motion. you can find a used lm7(5.3) for $500.00 anywhere. literally. i live in miami, fl and the lq4's and lq9's demand $1000.00 or more. dont even talk about ls1's and ls2's. if you can wait, try to find an lq4. i haVENT driven my 5.3 and i hope it has enough power for my '87 c10. threads on ls1tech say 5.3 are good motors.the are required/wanted especially for there price.

hmmm.... i would rather get get a fresher used motor for that price.....

but the funny thing is, I have had a motor sit outside for a year and a half with a sock on the TB and no cover.... it ran hard and never ate a dime of oil.

His concern was from the obvious neglect seen in the pictures and from it being under a tarp for several years

As you know tarps disintegrate in the elements, especially after extended periods. With the amount of rust and oxidation covering the engine, its a sure bet its been wet for quite some time

Itd be a great core engine, but not a first choice for a dropout runner

Another vote for pass on the first engine

Thanks guys, I passed.

BUT

this popped up
6.0 and 4L80E out of a 2000 3/4 ton 2wd truck comes with harness and computer, motor/tranny works great, about 50K, 2000.00 obo can deliver
If I can get this for $1700-1800, would this be a good or at least decent deal? thanks again

That sounds like a good deal if the miles are accurate. But the 4l80e might be a little harder to get into a Nova though.

Sounds better...be sure to get the accelerator pedal and TAC module....as it should be drive by wire......makes it easier instead of mixing and matching parts.....

Well, the guy does not want to go below 2k, but now have a guy that says he has a 03+ lq9 with 19K on it and is willing to do $800 for the long block.

I also had a guy that came to pick up some parts say he has a rod shop he is moving down to Iowa and has several lsx motors he may sell, one being a 2000 lq4 with 24k on it, but needed to see what it all still had as his stuff is being all shuffled around in the move and needs to get back to me. This one sounds like it will be more complete and he said the guy asking 2k for his setup was high, so I should be able to get this cheaper. He also said he could put different heads on it as they were still the steal heads, and I might be able to work out a deal as he has somewhere an ls6 cam too.... still waiting on pricing though. He also threw out there that he could build an iron ls1 out of a bored out 5.3, fresh longblock for $2500, but that is out of my starting range.

So...... what to do, what to do.....

edit: now he says it came from his personal '05 2500hd, so it would be an lq4, not lq9.......
