Default G-Body Malibu Wagon Computer Location?

Im tryin to wrap up my swap, but I just cant see anywhere to put the ECM in my 82 Wagon. Under the seat seems to be the best spot, I'm just worried about the seat hitting it. Id rather keep it inside if possible to accomodate the cleaner, less cluttered look I have goin on right now.

There are a couple guys on my site that have mounted them under the dash (behind the glovebox area).

I mounted mine on the driver side wheelwell. Now I wish I had taken the time to modify the harness to mount the ECM inside the car for a cleaner look.

I'm 82LSWagon over on MR. Do you know if they are running a/c or not? I looked behind the glove box, there is just not any room that I see.
I have a plan to get it into the kick panel, but it wont be very pretty. Thinkin of goin under the seat again.

I own a G-Body car and I can't imagine how a Gen III computer would fit where the factory computer was without looking like a hatchet job. I've had the entire dash out and unless you remove the AC goods or radio, it isn't going behind the glove box or pretty much anywhere else behind the dash.

I say under the passenger's seat is probably your best option since the engine bay is out.

LSXMalibu (or should I say 455_82malibu), what size cowl are you running? What's your hood clearance like? Are you running the truck alternator?

I don’t know how much seat clearance you have in an 82 wagon but I had the same concerns with my 86 SS Monte with split bench seats. Even with a spot cut through the carpet and padding it will still not be enough.

I also looked to mounting around the glove compartment but the duct work ( I have AC) doesn’t give enough space around that area to consider it.. In the end, I will probably fasten it where the stock monte ECU was and fabricate an enclosure. It will stick out more than the old one but will look fine once I cover it with carpet.

Where did the stock harness and ecu mount in your wagon? Same as mine?

Below is a picture where the stock ecu harness used to come through and where the new harness now is routed. To the right of the hole, on the kick panel is where the stock ECU was...

Yea, the wagon is the same up front at least. I had the ECU under the seat just sitting there, and I will have to re-examine it. Mine is in the stock location now, and I may be able to make it look clean. I'll get pics of the finished when its done, but heres how it is now. I am thinking I can glue another piece to the gap and screw it on the other side. We will see.

Well darn, call me wrong! I have an 83 Monte and I would have sworn the Gen III PCM was too tall to fit there. Did you trim any of the metal behind the panel or was it deep enough without modification?

I was rather surprised myself. The metal did not have to be trimmed. The plastic piece on the inside of the ECU however did. And the cover there is actually about 3/4" inward of where it was.(Why that gap was there.) Also, the stock outside piece had to have all the iside parts that held the computer trimmed out. Ill get better pictures when I finish it up, but here is what had to be cut off of the inside piece.

That really doesnt look bad from the side view.. lol.. Too bad the gap straight on doesn’t cut it.. As you indicated, If you fill that in with the same color trim.. or if its a different color you could shoot it with some color as I have seen some do with trim.. it probably would look pretty decent..

Thanks for the pics..

That’s what I figured.. as useless to some the glove box may be I actually wanted to keep it in tact..
