Default Which Power Steering Pump on 03' 5.3L

I just picked up an 03 5.3L for a steal but the guy loading it in my truck accidently dropped it and bent the power steering pump pulley. Car-part.com has 3 different power steering pumps listed for a 2003 Suburban: hydraulic brake booster , vacuum brake booster, w/Off road pkg (opt BPH or 9G3), or vacuum brake booster, w/o Off road pkg. Anyone know how to tell a difference by looking at the engine? I am swapping the engine into my 1998 silverado so if anywill work that would be great because the hydraulic brake booster one is the cheapest at $40 and its at the same location as the starter I need to go pickup. The others however go for around $75-85 at the closest location. Thanks for the help. Brad

I have found one for $30 local if a 1999 Silverado pump off of a 2wd would work.

They'll all work, but the one with the hydraulic brakes (hydroboost) will have an extra line on the side of the reservoir that will have to be blocked off, so I would avoid that one to save you some trouble.

I was kinda hoping they would all work because it wouldnt make sense to make a totally different accy. bracket for different years/models. Any idea what could be different on each...like from 2x4 to 4x4 to offroad package, etc? Could it just be valving inside the pump for different size tires and to compensate for 4wd? I want the one that has the least drag on the accys possible...

The valve in the pump is inside the pressure side. If you remove the large nut at the back of the pump the pressure relief valve comes out. It can be swapped with the one from your truck, the damaged one or the replacement you are buying. Honestly they are probably pretty close to if not exactly the same pressure and any real difference would be in the gear ratio of the box.

Now if you do what I did and put the GM pump on a Ford rack things get strange... The GM runs at a higher pressure than the Ford does, but there is a method to resolve that issue.

I've got one that I pulled off my 4.8L swap engine. I changed to a smaller diameter pulley, so I have the factory one. If you're interested, I'll sell it for $10+shipping from 35802. Email if interested, I don't check in here everyday. phillip@maliburacing.com

Maliburacing, how do you install such an item? With a press? If so what kinda shops would have the tools/skills to do so?

There is a pulley removal / install tool at your local parts store just for such occasion. Mine came from Autozone but I think all the major chains have them. I think the one I bought is made by a company called OEM or something like that and it carries a lifetime warranty which is good because I damaged mine after 3 uses on a stubborn pulley. It's only about $25 - 35 and they replaced it N.Q.A.. You can also rent it from them.

Yeah, you can "borrow" the tool from Autozone or some other parts chains. It will pull and intall the pulley. You will pay a deposit for the tool, and get your money back when you bring the tool back.

Oh, well then I will be buying that instead on a used one. The whole used pump was only $30 so I was thinking I would maybe get that anyways so I dont have to screw with removing the pulley or worring about a pump that hit the ground from a couple feet while attached to a 500lb engine, lol.

Good luck getting it off the bracket without pulling the pulley. If you do get it free, I wish you even more luck getting it back on. I'm not saying it can't be done but...

Now I do know a guy who drilled a hole in the pulley just for that reason but I just used a puller.
