I have the opportunity to buy a fairly clean 1995 Z28 for a great price with a salvage title, the car has a straight body but has a damaged K-member & control arm. and since I am already elbow deep in building a iron block 408 for a yet to be decided project the stars might be aligning for this project. two quick questions though before I pull the trigger.
LS1 T56 VS. LT1 T56 whats the difference? It looks like everybody uses the LS1 T56 is this because the older LT1 T56 won't fit or is the newer trans just better.
also it looks like everyone also uses a 98-02 steering rack & steering shaft because of LS1 header clearance. But what if the plan if for a custom turbo setup? Exhaust aside does the older 94-97 rack clear the 98+ LS1 Fbody oil pan??
Thanks for any help

I'm doing a similar swap right now. I think the steering rack is needed due to the alternator/motor position, the shaft to clear headers because the lt1 still has a rag joint. The LS1 trans fits better plus has the bolt holes that go through the oil pan. Maybe some of the other guys that have done this will chime in to correct any misinfo but I'm sure thats all correct.

I would use the LS1 Trans, it's alot less of a hassle and it bolts right up.
I prefer the LS Steering Rack & Linkage, it makes clearances alot better in the Engine bay.
I would try to use as much LS Components as you can(k-member, Rack, Tranny..etc), it makes life much easier. I tried the converison mounts already, and it was a pain in the ***.

^agreed. I have been researching hard core on this swap for a couple months.
I am also doing this swap.
I was lucky enough to swap all the necessary parts for the Lt1 t56 to ls1 t56. They are mid plate, input shaft, bell housing, change over to hydraulic throw out bearing instead of LT1 clutch fork system.
The best way to do this is get a donor LT1 body. And an LS1 front clip. Such as k-member, steering rack, accessories, engine mounts, etc.. If you dont have that accessibility it can get very costly trying to find all those little parts.
