Default LS2 or 6.0 vortec

i'm still working my through the different threads and write-ups on the late model GM motors.

i think i've settled on using a 6.0 motor instead of the 5.3 or the LS1. where i come up short, is it worth it to pay the extra chedder to the get the true blue LS2 or can i get the same results by using the 6.0 out of the trucks (that is the vortec correct)?

is there a difference (other than one being aluminum and one being iron) between the 2 blocks. is one block more efficient than the other? here's another question. i don't have any intention of running any type of forced induction or nitrous. from what i've read these motors are more than capable of producing 500+ hp with basically factory parts as long you piece together the proper heads, cams and intakes from the different LS motors. which is about where i'd like to be power wise. with that type of HP available, i don't have any intention of running crazy aftermarket heads and/or cams. i've found short block 6.0 truck motors for as little as $150 and a few running
6.0s for about $500-600 (these are high mileage units of course and the price goes up from there as the mileage comes down). if my intention is to swap out the cam, intake and heads anyway, would i be better off going with the 6.0 truck motor (short block or long block) or spending the extra money on an LS2? I've seen these go from $2800-$11,000. i also plan to run T56 if that makes any difference. i have read about the LY6s which sound great but i think i want to stay away from the VVT/DOD/AFM etc. ANY opinions would be greatly appreciated!

6.0 iron truck block or ls2 makes no difference except for the weight. If you dont mind the extra 80lbs, go with the 6.0 iron block

Not all 6.0's are the same. Go with a Gen IV and you get the much better L92 heads. They are still iron block but much better heads than the LS2's. Look at the LY6 for a start. It has VVT but can be removed if you like.

My vote goes for the 6.0 LS2.

I went with the iron block 6.0 LQ9. About 1/2 the price of an LS motor.

I have thought about the ly6 myself, as there is a low mile one local for $1400 as a junk yard long block, but that has the 58x reluctor, and even though I can get the computer, I can't get the wiring harness

I think it would be cheaper for me to get a lq4 and swap on the l92 heads in the long run......

+1 vote for truck motor

thanx for the links! EXCELLENT articles.

for me personally, i like the torque curve of the NON L92 head motor better. the car will be driven on the street 99% of its life and the big numbers from the L92 don't come on until AFTER 5000 rpm. BUT, the numbers themselves are VERY impressive!!

i guess my biggest question is.......is there ANY benefit by going with the
LS2? if my goal is say 500-550hp, would i be better off to "build" an LQ4 or slightly massage a LS2?

You get the right Cam with L92 Heads and you will have tons of Torque..my Torque curve peaked at 4700..and it's pretty stout in the 2500 area up..

i would prefer a ls2 with l92 heads than a lq4 with a 243 or 799 heads.
but lq4s are lot more common and 243 or 799 heads flow very well as is also.

The non L92s do certainly seem to be less picky on the cam and still make tq. across a broader band on average. Most of the aftermarket heads are still cathederal ports as well.

In short it all depends on your goals and how well you research your mods.
