The MAD site is very interesting. When using a remote solenoid, does the starter solenoid just get jumped out to the starter feed cable? Do LS starters work ok with this setup? The diode is stopping a backfeed from where?

Running an external starter relay is a pretty common fix for cars that suffer from starter heat soak. The external relay can be put on the fender away from exhaust heat. There are plenty of write ups around on how to do that. The MAD site just takes it one step further and puts the relay back next to the battery.

Ideally the big cable from the external relay should be hooked up to bypass the solenoid at the starter. This can be done by either hooking the cable directly to the lug coming out of the starter, or hooking a jumper across the two big lugs on the back of the starter solenoid. Either way effectively bypasses the starter solenoid. Most write ups I have seen just hook the starter solenoid up the normal way, with the exception of running a wire between the battery lug and the S terminal on the starter solenoid.

As for the diode, the primary on the external relay is just a big coil of wire. Cut off power to a coil and it creates a surge of current that needs to be dissipated somewhere. Having a diode across the terminals give the current a low resistance path to be discharged. Without the diode the current has to be dissipated through the wiring. My guess with the relay being all the way in the back of the car there was enough resistance in the long wire that the relay stayed energized for an additional second or two. That is why I suggested the diode to ls1nova.

I would think the remote disconnect switch will provide the same protection against the cable grounding out.

Actually I thought this was a pretty good thread. I never really thought about
the huge unprotected cable to the starter.
The MAD goy's way of adressing this seems prudent and not all that cumbersome.
The OEM's don't have this added protection typically which is a bit surprising.

I forgot about that, you knew more about that, then GM did, in that thread also
