Default T56 Mechanical Speedo

So I am 90 % done with my 2002 LS1 / T56 into my 69 nova and I need to get my gauges set up.

I am going for the stock look so I wand to maintain my stock speedo but the 02 T56 is a VSS electronic output.

I was looking at the Cable-x but and not satisfied with the reviews and more wires in the car.

So, I have read up and going to go ahead and set up my tail shaft in my mill and make the mechanical conversion myself.

I just want to put the word out there to see if anyone else has done this or had it done. I had drawn up the tail shaft housing in CAD with the measurements that I THINK ARE CORRECT but it is all best estimate at this point.

So, does anyone have the correct measurents to make the new cleanence hole and the adapter sleeve for the speedo "bullet"? Let me know.

I will also let you guys know how it turns out. Heck, maybe I can help out some others with offering my servieces.

I have seen that others will do this conversion on line but I cannot see spending $550 on something that I can do for $0 seeing as I have the machine and all of the parts from the old trans. The only thing that I have to purchase is the T5 gear that will slide onto the output shaft behind the reluctor ring.

I have the cable x on my swap and bought it from ebay, i believe it is them selling on ebay. I had the same concerns but they recommended a 30 slot box and said it is much smoother. I have not had any problems with it and only 3 wires to hook it up and you have to program it for your application with dip switches. I am very happy with mine. Less than 300.00 on ebay and it lets you keep the stock speedo.

FWIW, there' a guy Dan (Username: alloy) over on thirdgen.org that was doing the mechanical tailhousing mod for $300.

Thanks for the lead.

I think I am going to tackle it myself. It is not going to cost me a dime, except my time. I am up over $7K on my swap so I need to start cutting back on cost at this point and I know I can do it.

Good luck and let us know the results. I understand the dollars on these swaps mine was not cheap, it took two years because of that.

Well I have the CAD all done and am going to set up the tail shaft housing in a my mill this weekend. I am having a friend of mine turn the "sleeve" that holds the speedo bullet.

I know that the normal conversions are done with milling the tail shaft housing and then "epoxying" in the new insert to hold the speedo bullet but I am going to make everything out of aluminum and then TIG weld the sleeve into the housing.

You better make a bunch of sleeves because if you do it reasonably you will have a line of customers to offset your cost.

Does this system allow you to compensate for changes in the future, i.e New tire size?

Yes, it is adjusted by changing the positions of the dip switches. I've been using one in my Nova for 10 years, still works good.

Well, I converted my tail housing to a mechanical speedo and have NO issues with the speedo being off or bouncing....

I have had a number of people who would like this mod done to their tail housing.....thinking of setting up some solid fixtures and providing the service....

Would it be much more difficult to do this to an automatic (4l60e)? I know S&P sells a tailhousing adapter, but like everything they sell it's a little overpriced. Just about every swap I do needs a mechanical speedo....

Just ran across this thread. I'm the one that does these conversions that 85MikeTPI mentioned. I've done about 50 of them now, and still doing them.

Let me know if I can help anyone out with this.

Can't you just use a 700r4 tail shaft on the 4l60e?

Default T56 speedo conversion

Hey guys! Does anyone have a CAD drawing or exact measurements for the mechanical speedo install? I teach auto technology at an area vocational school and the students and I have access to a mill. I have some directions from stealth conversions and the 97 and up T56 instuctions. The measurements in the stealth conversion are vague. Would like to have exact instructions if available. Thanks Tom
