Default Gauge cluster question

I have a question about the 1998 gauges..
I know that this year they were still analog so everything goin to it has it's own wire to send the signal(Tach, Speedo, Temp..etc), how does the digital odometer work? If I'm correct it doesn't go through a BCM, the Gauge Cluster itself breaks down the VSS signal.

The car is a 1998 V6 Camaro that is getting a LS in it..we are trying to use the stock V6 Cluster for now just to see if it will work, maybe eventually upgrade to the V8 Cluster. I can get the info how to wire it, I'm just trying to understand how it works.

The 98 wiring diagram shows a VSS ouput. I assumed it process the VSS signal and puts it out in a 4k ppm to the speedo and cruise control like later years.

The V8 cluster should plug in, since the manual doesn't show a differant plug for the V6 from the V8
Yes the odometer runs from the 4K PPM signal

Cool..I was figuring that they would work. Thanks guys.

You guys keep saying 4k ppm signal..is that just for the auto, or is that the base line signal input?

VSS output is 40 pusle/revolution on automatics, about 110k ppm. Manual trans is 17 pulse/revolution. It seem the standard input for OEM and aftermarket speedos is 4k ppm. The computer converts accordingly.
