Default Powertrain Advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm researching a drive train for my 95 Land Cruiser. My concern is the dry weight is 6,230lbs. I was thinking a 5.3/4l60 my be to light weight and that a 5.3/4l80 should be good.

What do y'all think?

Thank you.

Where did you get that weight figure from?? The curb weight for even the newer 2007 models is only 5425lbs, not sure how you came up with 6230lbs.

As for transmissions, a beefed up 4L60E would probably work just fine, but your best bet for the most reliable performance would be the 4L80E, which even in stock form is damn near bulletproof, even in a truck.

I got it from the door sticker. I went out to reread and it said GVWR. So I guess that is fully loaded. I went searching on the web and found out that the "curb" weight is actually 4760.

The 4L80E is definitely an improvement over the 4L60E in the heavier vehicles (over 4,000-4,500 lbs), especially if you drive aggressively. If you're going to baby it or if you drive like a little old lady (I don't know how you drive, but I'm just sayin') then the 4L60E will be adequate. But if you want to beat on it, the 4L80E will probably be worth the extra trouble. They're not THAT much harder to wire in.

I drove a rollback with a fuel injected 8.1L and a 4L80E. I would load it up with two cars, and run it at 75-85mph (computer-regulated top speed) up and down the big hills on the Pennsylvania turnpike. The first one crapped out at about 20k miles. The dealer replaced it under warranty, and then we put a big cooler on it, a deep pan, and ran it hard until we traded it in at over 100k miles and it never missed a beat. To put it in perspective with a 4,500lb Land Cruiser, the rollback's loaded weight was an easy 17,000 lbs.
