How to lighten 74 camaro
For those that are interested my '69 Camaro with a 5.3L iron block weighs 3500 lbs with my in it (200 lbs). The car doesn't have very many options (no console, no A/C, etc. It's quite a bit heavier than I anticipated.
Do you have pics of your car? What all is in it. Headers, alumimum intake, auto trans 400 or 350, wheels, 10 bolt or 12 bolt rear end, race front seats, heater core, iron or aluminum water pump, aluminum radiator, steel or fiberglass hood, what wheels, 350 small bock etc?
I once owned a 67 camaro with a 327 and a 4 speed. Published curb weight on that car was about 3200lbs if I remember right.

The motor is a stock 2004 5.3L truck motor iron block with Al heads. Everything and I mean everything is stock on the motor including the ugly *** truck intake and stock cast iron exhaust manifolds. It is setup with DBW. The trans is a TH350. 10 bolt rear. Completely stock interior but with no console, no A/C, but does have heat. The radiator is a Al/composite from the 2004 truck. Hood is stock cowl hood.
I plan on putting in a LS1 5.7L block with ported heads,a aftermarket cam. That should drop some weight off the nose while adding 100+ HP.
I messaged oldschool on that site but no responses so far. He says he ran a 6.74 in the 1/8th. Do you know his combo, engine, trans, gears, etc he is running. Or is there a build thread showing a lot more detail on the building of that car?
Just curious. That is exaclty how I want to use mine for street/strip and running pretty good times in the 1/8th.

Nice car. Is this a drag only car or street strip? Thanks on the wheels. Buy the way does 4.5 BS mean 4.5 inch back spacing? If so how does one do that. Sorry about the newb questions I am new to putting wheels on one of these cars. I know a hell of a lot about the drive train etc. Not much about wheels.
How will the car drive and brake on the street like that? I am not into cornering. Mostly straight line acceleratlion and drag racing, Street strip. As long as I can get by it will be work.
Also another newb question. If my car already has aluminum bumpers, why not fab up some aluminum or light mounts and just delete the heavy factory mounts set up. Has anyone tried that or does anyone know of a light mounting kit for the factory bumpers? I have heard most of the weight is in that leaf spring and shock absorber mount hardware setup.
What did ya do to lighten that car. What is the drive train combo etc? What are ya asking for the bumper. Do ya have one on the front too?
Thanks Dude!

Thanks for the thread and other info on old schools cool car. So the 4l80e is sort of like a turbo 400 with an overdrive or a 4 speed correct? Is it much heavier than a turbo 400? I heard it is a very stout tranny. Another advantage of the 4l80e is it may have a lower 1st gear for a better launch ratio than a turbo 400 because its a 4 speed. Is that correct? I believe its also made to mate right up to a LS motor.
I wont throw a big block with a stroker kit at it. But I will throw my 364 cube LQ4 with turbo cam and 75mm turbo at it a bit down the road. Should be close to 800hp and 800ft lbs of torque. Then later after I build up the short block with forged pistons, rods & crank I will put a bigger turbo on it & crank up the boost and probably be 1000 - 1200 hp. But that is all stage 2 a bit later down the road when budget allows etc.
I will have to check out that thread, that is a great website!

Nice camaro. So the Gt4294 is a 94 MM turbo? Sounds like your running the 5.3L LM7 with turbo 400. What rear end gears? How fast is that car in the 1/8th and the quarter? How much does it weigh and how much boost are you running? Is that a stock bottom end LM7 with a cam and intake? Are you running a 10 bolt, 12 bolt or 9 inch ford rear end? Mind if I ask the details on your combo?
My car will be similar with the LQ4 6.0 L and a borg warner S400 75 MM turbo with turbo 400 trans and 3.73 gears. I wil be running about 15 lbs of boost with a VS racing 200.00 intercooler, meth injection and pump gas.
Hoping to hit mid 6's in the 1/8th.

So you gutted your front bumper's support area mounts or the car (meaning interior etc). Also you ran a fiberglass front end or clip or a fiberglass front bumper?
Did you replace your factory bumper mounts and run any stock bumpers?
The tubular front subframe sounds interesting, Where do you get them and how much do they cost? I imagine you have to drop the whole front clip off the car to replace a subframe.
So the front suspension and fenders, engine removed, everything up front has to come apart to replace the subframe correct?
Thanks for any advice IHATETHEMUSTANGS!
