Default lq9 cam recomendations

hey , does anyone have recomendations for a cam to use on an lq9 engine , nothing too harsh . ad some power without sacraficing too much? thanks

I'm no expert, but the LQ9 already runs the same cam as an LS1. The next upgrade would be an LS6 cam. That only provides more hp in the 5000+ rpm range. On the LS motors, they had to upgrade the intake to take advantage of that. If you're keeping the LQ intake, that probably wont support more flow in that rpm range.
Leave it alone or upgrade everything, the intake, exhaust, cam, etc if you want more hp.

From what I have read, there is surprising power to be gained with just a mild cam swap. Most dyno tests show 30 to 60 hp at the crank. A camshaft just wakes these motors right up!

Based on the dyno tests I have read, you should have a look at the Comp Camps XR269HR. It produces more power and torque everywhere in the powerband. I would upgrade the valve springs though.

first off what heads are you using? 317's,243's,L92's or aftermarket?

Do not go by the magazine articles...... They often do not reflect real world conditions vs many guys here and other places who have real world results with such factors as drivetrain % losses and other tangibles equated in..... Too many times guys see these magazine articles and think they are going to get the same power from an engine dyno with completely different setups such as header dia, TB, air quality, etc...

Go by real world results do not get sucked into magazine articles.....

What is your power target and you need to list the full package.... Selecting a cam is about the complete package, not just pick a cam and mix matching parts.....

honeslty i am new to the whole ls engine thing... i have dreamed of putting this type of combination in my 67 since i first started dreaming of building it. at this point i still need to find a computer and have it remapped, but if i am going to do any cam changes i need to do that before having it programmed.so at this point everthing is stock. i know i will have to put aftermarket headers on it , and so far that is where i am at. thanks for the help by the way

You still didnt specify which heads are on the engine. But fwiw, I would recommend the TR224.

I'm curious to see replies as well as I'll probably end up going cam (and spring)-only while I stockpile other parts in my 317-headed lq9. Might call up a sponsor and see what they say. Mostly looking for sound and low-rpm torque.

Most everything I have read says that the LQ4 and LQ9 will not lose any noticeable bottom end torque with cams up to 220 degress of duration at .050". This is why I recommended the Comp Cams XR269HR. It is 216 degress of duration at .050". Most any of those aftermarket cams will require a professional tune to help the idle and driveability though.

I'd suggest you go over to the performance truck forums (link on the home page). There's a ton of discussion there regarding camming these motors.
